I just cant seem to beat warlord. I see people beat higher levels by doing the same thing I do but I cant win. I like going to war alot so domination/time (yes time) victories are for me. But when I play cheiftain I CRUSH the 2nd leader by 1250 and the lowers by 2000 points. What do I do wrong? My opponents always expand way quicker and barbs are hard. One game I was 2nd and a good position with the ottomans and my neighbor that was 1st was pulling away so I declared war. Its seems that he had endless units and could defend against my huge army. I couldent take a city and the war was dragging on making my empire weak. I resigned 10 turns later. How should I improve?

Post a game around 1000bc and get some advice. Posting any game around 1200ad is not much use.

Your first build should normally be a worker. Then grow to size 3 working food resources. Then settler.

The biggest mistake on early levels is not expanding enough and maybe spacing cities too far apart. don't judge expansion on Ai expansion speed. Always keep grabbing land!!

Hard to give any proper advice without a save.

Heck..post a game from the start and get advice. It's the early game that matters, and no matter how much you say things like ("doing the same things I do") I can assure you with 100% confidence that you are failing in many critical early aspects of Civ IV gameplay.

Many pieces of the puzzle exist early on that, if you improve in these areas, your results will skyrocket exponentially.

First off, I would pretty much ignore things like scoreboard for now. Your relative position really matters not much at all, and doesn't always reflect your empire's true potential, especially early on. Score will come one way or another, it is how you get there that matters. (i think Batman said that)

Second, why not just say goodbye to the kiddie levels, and just start playing on at least Noble level - neutral field. If you post a game and listen and practice some of the advice we give you, then you will win on Noble pretty easily.

Otherwise, it's really hard to give pointed advice in a vacuum. We can only speculate on the issues your games have from just what you mention above. We need to see your games and see you play.

Oh..and keep in mind that pretty much everyone who has played this game was in your shoes at some point. It will get better very fast if you listen and learn.

Oh ok thanks. I tried to be "descriptive" because I currently can not get to my computer that has Civ on it so I have denied acces to saves. I might be able to post a save, in the future time. But what about if I am early rushing? Still first worker build? Also whenever I try to rush, like last time with rome, I couldn't get Iron and I got killed by the 'Murica. I accidentally settled across from the iron on Island thinking that I could get it by water but it did not show up. When I got praetorians, it was way to late so I resigned that too.

Your first build on this game is nearly always worker first. This enables you to improve the food/other resources near your first city. Your second build should normally be warrior while your city grows to size 3. Then followed by settler. These builds can change. Only if you decide to spam warriors to rush a neighbour. Or if you start near a sea food resource like fish.

I assume by rush this means completed before 1000bc? Maybe 500bc with praets at latest?

Overall we can give very little help to your game here without a save. Your description of game is vague to say the least. I find it strange to believe the Americans are wiping you out on Warlord. You start with huge advantage over the Ai on this level. The AI barely build any large stacks on this level up to 1ad+. In any case start a game and then provide a save. If you play to 1000bc it will give us an idea of what you are up to here. Starting save would be useful too.

Worker first unless you're planning a warror rush, quite possible on lower levels if you have a close neighbour. Anything later than warrior rush go worker first because improved tiles means you get farms, pastures and mines so you get hammers earlier so you get units earlier.

Ok thanks, and yes the rush is usually going to be Chariot/Axemen/Praetor. So around 1000Bc.

Axes should be a bit sooner than 1000bc. If you are chopping/whipping the axes there is no reason you can't have 10 or so quite quickly. Assuming you are not targeting an AI more than 10 or so tiles away from your borders. Were talking Warlords here. The Ai won't settle a second city till at least 2000bc. Even by 1000bc they may not even have 3 cities with at best 2 defenders. So your early game play is probably not optimal.

Simple rules of thumb for an efficient start that works in most maps:
Worker is first build
Research tech that allows you to improve your capitols food immediately
Don't found an early religion unless you started with mysticism (even if you do, consider why e.g. you have grain and started with agriculture so the worker can improve it, or you want to try culture victory/religious economy strategy)
Settle your second city with a food source in the first ring i.e. adjacent to your city tile. If you are creative second ring food is OK but know that it will slow you down a little - make sure there is a reason for second ring food e.g. it gets you access to a strategic resource elsewhere in the BFC.
Switch to slavery once you have researched bronze working. Learn how to use the whip for turning food into production.
Don't save forests for later unless you have a pinpoint precise reason (e.g. I am building oracle and I will take metal casting, but I don't have the prerequisite tech yet)

or just never found an early religion
