How to fairly split utilities with roommates?

I've been living with (male) roommates and housemates from june 1992 until september 2007 (yup, only alone recently, the soon to be mrs. Stapel will move in 3 weeks though).

I can tell you one clear thing: Split the stuff evenly. end of discussion, close the thread .

Itemize the phone bills. Get a programable thermostat and have everyone agree on the settings and dont change them. Split everything else.

Phonebills are the worst. Last house-share I had, I just opted out. Used my mobile to make calls and kicked in 1/3 of the line rental so people could call me and to facilitate the internet. I lived with a Finish girl who swore blind a bunch of calls to Finland were not hers, pointing out that we all knew Fins. All of whome we knew because they were in the UK.

Not sure if it is available where you are, but it used to be posssible to have the phone so everyone has to put a code in to make a call, and then the bill comes pre-devided.
