How to install a custom Leaderhead in BtS

In Colonization (I don't know whether to put this here) I tired to modify the Civ4LeaderheadInfos.xml file and it wouldn't let me so much as press enter. Do y'all know what the problem is?

Yeah, I'm running Vista. Thing is, all these terms in English are hard to translate into Spanish. I am an English speaker (of course) but I got my Computer here in Peru and it's in Spanish. Can you roughly tell me how to modify it with admin rights? I'll deal with translating the stuff :p

hmm. I also speak German :p still, neither one is my first language. Still, I think I could manage if you told me what they were in German and I could figure out what they were in Spanish. Someone else told me it was that Colonization files are Read-Only and I need to change that. Do you know how to do that?

I'm trying to get this to work and having a hell of a time doing it. I put all the updated files in the appropriate custom asset folders. Everytime I try to run it I get the following error.

Failed Loading XML file xml\Civilizations/CIV4LeaderHeadInfos.xml.
[.\FXml.cpp:133] Error parsing XML File -
File: xml\Civilizations/Civilizations/CIV4LeaderHeadInfos.xml
Reason: Invalid at the top level of the document.

Line: 1,1
Source <?xml version="1.0"?>

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've never seen that in English (completely at least). That means that in CIV4LeaderheadInfos.xml, you need to check to see if you accidentally deleted anything from the top. If this is your only new leaderhead, you can always copy/paste the original .xml file and start over. My advice to you: stay away from modding the top lines. If you haven't touched them, I don't know what to tell you. Does the game crash after this or does it run? And if it does, can you access your leaderheads/civs after loading or does it crash?

Thanks for the quick reply. It must be something to do with my XML editor (XML Notepad 2007) adding something at the top of each file. I had to go back and copy over the files from BTS and then edit them all manually using notepad. What a pain. It works now with a few minor issues I need to resolve, but at least I'm making progress.

Is there a good xml editor that doesn't cause this type of issue?

Right click on the file, and select "Properties". Then you should see a box checked at the bottom of the screen as "Read-Only". Uncheck it and click OK.

Try Notepad++, it's what I use. It's good because you can easily go to an area that's messed up, and if you have some code that doesn't begin or end properly, you just click and if it turns blue, it should correspond with another piece of code. If it doesn't then you know what went wrong

I tried this, but the Read Only button was greyed-out. Just to be clear, the file I used is the copy of the file included in the normal Colonization folder. It's funny, on the Colonization file, I've gotten almost no help, but here, (where this probably shouldn't be:mischief:)I've gotten tons of help!

Hmm... what could be causing this error? Everything is alright. (I think)

That means that LEADER_TAIZONG isn't loaded from LeaderheadInfos, ie it doesn't exist.

That's always annoying, especially when you add a new one and then it decides that none of the other leaderheads exist :p

thanks. i'll check it out. That is a badly worded error, points me to the wrong document.

Edit: Now it's deciding to hide all of China's civilopedia info and the leaderhead doesn't show up. Yipee.

edit 2: ok everything is working. :)

How did you get that to work? I've had too many leaderheads die because it won't display them in the Civilopedia, and in-game they crash the game.

I don't exactly remember, but either the following two happened:

I started using Notepad ++ aand everything started to work for a number of things.

I compared it line per line with a working costum leader, and found an error and corrected it.

Huh. I know that using Notepad++ helped me, but I'm too lazy to compare it line per line.

Than just compare the ones likely causing the error. (bad tags, the beggining, etc.)

Alternatively, you could copy the file from another mod who has the same leaderhead.

Actually, that's what I've been doing: taking the closest leaderhead to the one I'm installing and just copy/pasting it, but there's nothing to show that it is incomplete. The leaderheads I use are always working (I kill the ones that don't work by putting them in a "Civ Downloads in Waiting" folder, which is where my non-functional or just downloaded civ-downloads go. On that note: can somebody post a link to a tutorial explaining how to add a custom civ/wonder/movie/unit?
