How to make image smaller.

Hi. I want to make my avatar image, but it's 30 KB instead of 4 KB. Is there a way I can compress it so it looks about the same, but will fit on the site?

Try saving it as a gif or png.

Also, in Photoshop and Gimp there's a "save to web" option. Play with the image quality and other settings until you get the size you want.

Depends, but for anything avatar sized, or cartoony, generally not.

I seem to recall that my png avatars had much larger file sizes than my jpg avatars...

You can also use Irfanview with the plugins installed. One of them allows you to specify a maximum file size when you save. If the plugin can't get it to that file size, it will give you an error, otherwise it will optimize the image so that it fits.
