How To: Make Leaderheads! Ekmek's Guide

remove the SkinPartition from the NiSkinInstance of the NiTriStrips (if you export as Strips - like needed by lh - you don´t need a SkinPartition [and you can´t have one])

Man Ekmek, I wish I had your patience. This shows me what a great deal of crap you went through to teach me how to do this. A lot of this stuff is actually frustratingly simple.

Havnig said that trial and error is the only way to learn (just look back at the many posts I was involved in in this thread). I have a question though; Huayna who is that supposed to be? It looks cool.

I'm not sure its patience, i think its persistence. And with you it definetely paid off! I'm motivated at thought of seeing about 10 LH makers out there cranking out stuff all the time. You and cfkane are doing great work regularly but considering all the requests out there, we can obviously use more LH makers.

Hopefully this guide will be enough to get people that really want to see a specific leader to give it a shot. hopefully they get into the fun of creating them and stick around to answer a few requests too.

Thanks Coyote, I didnt know about this. I'll work on adding it to my troubleshooting section in the future

I agree completely, and since a lot of LHs have already been done we are seeing more and more, what I call, obscure requests. Which is fine, but people have to understand that the more obscure a request is the less likely I am to do it, and I am sure I speak for all of the other LH makers. Cfkane is cool because he makes fictional LHs, while that does increase the workload on guys like us, I can at least say that for myself it has given me a few ideas here and there. Which ultimately goes to your point that the more LH makers there are, the better the LHs will be in the end.

But back to your original point; for leaders that I call "obscure" (and I mean no offense to anyone in particular, I just mean that they are not leaders of normal civs in the game, or of popular modular civs, or requested very often that's all I mean, I am making no judgements on the person's achievements or the achievements of the nation s/he may have lead) it would be nice if some of the people who request them would say to themselves "well I think I can just do it on my own."

It really isn't that difficult once you get the hang of it. I mean, I could probably belt out a quick LH in a matter of a few hours as long as I knew what I wanted it to look like specifically. So anyone who is reading this should really take to heart what Ekmek says, and appreciate the time and effort he puts into helping you out. I can honestly say that if it was not for him NONE of the LHs I have made would ever have existed (well, a lot of them anyway).

It's supposed to be Stephen III of Moldavia. He's based on Champlain from C4C. Thanks for the compliment. If you look in the development thread I have in the main C&C forum, I have the non-crowned version if you want to test it :) That would be a big help.

You can take LH's from C4C and add edit them for use in BtS? That's something I'll bear in mind.

I downloaded blender, python 2.6, PYFFI, but I can't download the latest Nif Scripts! When I go to the site, Explorer just say "It cannot display the webpage" AHH!

EDIT; ok so I managed to download the Nif Scripts but they said I needed Python 2.5! When I installed Blender, It said I needed python 2.6!

In my guide and the first post I included all the downloads with links. I excluded 2.49a because it needs 2.6 python. Try the links I have here and install in this sequence: (unintall the othre stuff first)

Hi, great tut, i resurrected an old username especially so that i could get creative with leaderheads, something i've always wanted to do.

So after nearly completing the tutorial (I got right up to getting the lh playable in Nifscope when i discovered a huge error i made, luckily i know what i did wrong and so i set out to start again with my own creation. Now my leaderhead looks really god but i'm having a little trouble exporting it as a Netimmerse/gamebryo file. I click okay, wait for a little while and get a message which says EXPORT ERROR Cannot export mesh with unweighted vertices. The unwieghted vertices have been selected so they can easily be identified

Now it just selects the shoulder, which i made sure i assigned to the right bone, over and over again. It appears to be weight painted properly and i can't understand what i'm doing wrong. Has anyone else had this error message before???

For the part about moving the hands: For me, it wouldn't let me rotate the arm without making him an Igor. I found just moving the hand worked fine.

I've run into that before. it seems not to always highlight the right part. So two ways to see whats the matter.

the quick way is to assign everything and every mesh to a bine like a toso then export. if it exports then thats good it really is a mesh.

the more tediuos weay and you may have to do this anyways is to go to each mesh/object and pick a bone then press select so it highlights do it for all the bones and then hide them (sometimes there is stuff behind). do it until you fine some unassigned polygons. if that still doesnt work attach your blend to the next post and tell me which nif you based it off and i'll take a look.

but if you ove the hands out of synch with the bones they will be distorted when you put it in game. if rotating the arms distorts your mesh you deselect some parts the you dont want affected or after rotating edit the polygons back into place. thats just part of the pain of modelling.

Oh, good to know. Thanks for telling me.

I am upgrading my stuff, so all I have to do is install this stuff in this order and proceed as normal? Or is there something else I have to do after installing all of this stuff.

EDIT: I noticed that UV Face Select wasn't there anymore, does this mean I forgot to do something?

Ekmek, I read your LH guide- and I think I understand now the basics. However, I have encountered a problem on my first try to make my own leaderhead. I have more or less succeeded putting Zara Yaqob in Charles de Gaulle's suit. It even worked ingame. Now I'm trying to make a leaderhead by putting Kublai Khan (the one who's named Qin Shi Huang in the files) in Mehmed's suit. When I try exporting it it tells me there are "unweighted vertices" and it cannot be exported. What do I do?

Seems that your the second person to run into this. I'm going to have to add it to trouble shooting. Basically it means you forgot to rig something and blender doesnt actually do a good job of identifying it. here is what I pasted before:

the quick way is to assign everything and every mesh to a bone like a torso then export. if it exports then thats good it really is a mesh.

if that still doesnt work attach your blend to the next post and tell me which nif you based it off and i'll take a look. I'll trouble shoot this some more and see what the issues are.

All right, I'll try that. Anyway, as I already said, the nifs I took are Kublai Khan's and Mehmed's. I didn't do anything except removing Kublai's suit and importing Mehmed's, just like you show in your tutorial.
