Humankind - Norsemen discussion thread

Yeah, norsemen has a certain kind of sound, especially to the uninitiated. You can see that by reading the comments on reddit, facebook, twitter and Instagram. On each and everyone of them, the same joke has been made: "where are the norsewomen?". So there's a point with Norse, but that's only a english solution language-wise.

Simply “The Norse” just sounds and flows a lot better in my opinion. They’re even called as such the second OpenDev scenario.

You are not looking forward to choose the "Nordisch" or "Altnordisch" in your localized version?

Normannen would be the term in German, right, and the Men are right there... But if you put that in French you get Normands and then you are right in one region of France which takes its name from that culture, but nowadays as a term is confined to that area. Just tried on wiki: Norse people (!) exist in English, but not in German or French (but in all the Scandinavian languages and f.e. Italian or Spanish as well).

Just to show, naming gets really tricky :)

"A Norse is a Norse
Of course, of course,
They don't make their living by playing the Bourse
They sail the seas in a strake-sided horse
And dream of home and a female Norse"

- with apologies to the writers of Mr. Ed and the entire Scandinavian peninsula

I've updated the Humankind Features Thread (sorry been a bit lax there).

the Norse are a good addition, it would have been great to see them have a trading focus, but this works
