I Can Do Better (somewhat Open SG - Read on)

1.660: Holy Toledo! Most of the country is dirt poor and completely corrupt. We're trying to squeeze our scientists for some Gunpowder, but there is, what, 1 library in the whole country, a handful of marketplaces, and a couple of luxuries. Ouch. The country has been through a lot of war.

The new administration, having no opinions about the Greeks one way or another, takes a fresh look at things and decides that peace isn't such a bad idea. A massive reconstruction effort is started. Courthouses, marketplaces, and libaries are started, as well as some workers in towns with maxed-out pop. The whole empire is managed with emphasis on building new infrastructure in the places it's needed most. We're broke, so temples can be rushed on the border maybe once per turn.

To secure the border, we sign an ROP with Greece, England, Sumeria, and Arabia. They throw in a few dozen gold for the opportunity to do some sightseeing in our third-world nation. We also sell Navigation to the Greeks for 29 GPT and they even pay 5GPT + 7G for our WM. Hehe! The Babs are going to capitulate soon, anyway, so we sign an MA versus the Americans with them for 2GPT + 11G. We also sign an MA with Arabia versus Germany.

We're running 80/20 sci/lux and will have Gunpowder in 6 turns, with some extra income for our treasury so we can rush some much-needed cluture in the Northern territories.

2.670: A bunch of workers are produced and quickly start mining. Our Southern miliary garrisons almost take Frankfurt, leaving an archer quaking in his boots. We settle Gergovia and Cataract, consolidating recently acquired Greek lands under our banner. The paper-pushers do a little bit more MM and promise Guns in 4.

3.680: We take Frankfurt with no losses or promotions. Germany still wont talk.

4.690: Construction continues.
IT: English complete Smith's. They're a juicy little civ. Gonna be fun to concquer in a couple of dozen turns. But not yet. Our empire needs work.

5.700: More building.

6.710: We discover Gunpowder and beeline for Metallurgy.
Germany is willing to talk, and they pay us 3G + WM for peace. We write an ROP as well, just for the hell of it. They share an island with England. When we're ready, we can choose one as an ally and sick them on the other, then we feast on the remains. But we need infrastructure, a modernized military (at least muskets and guns, if not cavalry) and some galleons first. If we land on our future ally's land before declaring war on the other, we don't even need frigates, because noone will bother our transports.

7.720: We sell Guns to the Arabs for Printing + 6GPT + 2G. If not from us, they will get it from the Greeks, who now have the same techs as we do. Lux is dropped to 10%.

8.730: The palace expands 5 times in a row. The people like peace. WLTKD in a bunch of cities, speeding up our construction efforts.
IT: America begs for peace, offering gold. We refuse, keeping our word to the Rotten Apple administration, such as it was...

9.740: More building.
IT: America sinks an empty boat that was coming home from Greece.

10.750:England finally trusts us enough to pay 69 G for our spare Iron. We promptly rush a temple. Then we sell her Furs for 5 GPT. Both Germany and England now have access to iron and horses. I would't be surprised if they start going at each other even before we're reasy to join the party. There's a puny little boat making its way around the Southern tip of the continent that we mght be able to use to ferry some troops over there. Who knows 2-4 knights just might be able to do some damage.

We're researching at 80% and luxury spending is down to 0%. We'll have Chemistry in 5, unless we buy it from someone before then. There are some prospects, but they all want too much. Since we have building left to do, I don't think we're in a rush to acquire military techs. The only danger we face is the Greek culture, but another temple rush or two will keep the risks down to a minimum.

I'm up in three or four games right now, so it may be a day or two until I can get to this.

If you can play before I post a got it grs, then just post and play, and I'll grab it after you.

Are you all still looking for another player? Been following your thread and it looks like a really fun game.

Yeah, we are Pegleg. (hehe)

If you want grab it now, otherwise, I think I can probably get it tonight.

ha! the peglegephant is great! i'm working on a custom avatar but i'm horrible with paint programs.

anyway i'm excited to jump in. working all night so sesnofwthr, go ahead. i'm available sunday night and all during the week.

OK, I've got it then.

Turns up in a few hours. Sorry for the delay everyone. :)

IHT – Looks fine here.

760 ad (1) – Hmm. With 60g in the bank, we’re the third wealthiest nation.

770 ad (2) – I can drop science 10%.

IT – Sumeria and Arabia sign peace.

780 ad (3) – I lose out on trading Chemistry by a turn. I rush a temple in Cataract. Manage science to a point where a single scientist changed would push it to two turns.

IT – Now it gets interesting – America signs Germany on against us, costing us our dyes.

790 ad (4) – Chemistry comes in, start Metallurgy. Have to MM a bunch of cities because of the dyes. Hurry temple in Arausio. Move a few knights to go over to German lands.

800 ad (5) – Rush a temple in Durocorotorum, or something like that. Load up the knights for deployment.

810 ad (6) – Start Lugdunum on a Mil Acad prebuild. Drop off our three knights on the German saltpeter.

IT – Arabia and Germany sign peace. Arabia and America sign peace. Our 3 knights kill a pike, 2 MDI, and a LB on defense. We lose one of the knights, and a second is retreated. One gets a promotion and still stands on the salt.

820 ad (7) – I pillage the salt and get the knights out of dodge.

IT – See some German units heading for the capitol.

830 ad (8) – Pretty quiet here.

IT – I need to throw in salt to renew our incense deal with Arabia.

840 ad (9) – I reposition one of the armies to deal with the incoming Germans better.

850 ad (10) – The Germans still don’t land. :(

Recap: The science is again managed so a scientist difference means an extra turn. We should grab cavs next, and think about taking out the Greeks, Germans, and English, though not necessarily in that order. I do think we should wait until galleons for the Germans and English so we can get our armies over there. I have started building a few caravels for later upgrade. Our MA’s against America are about to end, and I would recommend canceling them and making peace so we can concentrate on matters at home.

No screenie since there's not much to see. ;)

>>>SAVE<<<

Can we sign the English on against the Germans? It would be really nice to be able to land in friendly territory and poach cities that have already been pounded by our allies...

We probably could, but since we can't land in force, I think we would just watch England take the cities. We've only got one or two caravels ATM.

Posting a "got it" here.

Let me see if I have our plans correct. We want to make peace with the Americans when they will accept it, making them break their deal with Germany. Our peace treaty with Greece expires in 1 turn and we are 1 turn from metallurgy... Should we wait for cavalry before going after Greece again? I haven't checked over the save all that closely but things looked good at first glance. And lordy is America ever a beast! Looks like they'll be a tough nut to crack.

Hmm, I wouldn't be in such a hurry to make peace with America and go to war with Greece. Let Greece and America bash their navies together for a while longer. Take out Germany and then England with the soon-to-be obsolete military while building a more modern army on the home continent. At some point Greece will attack us, we will get the reverse WW bonus, and we'll have a modern military to crush them with. Hopefully. If they attack too soon, we'll be in a war of attrition, bashing their knights against our knights. I would sign some sort of a deal with them to make it more likely we'll get 20 turns to build cavalry.

So... my job then is to build some more knights and infrastructure, continue research to MT, and let the other civs beat up on each other a bit. Can do.

You can also try to land a few muskets to eat up some German units on the salt hill near our borders....:mischief: Since they are actually playing a 4CC (IIRC) any units we can make them lose before we can really land is a good thing, as long as it doesn't cost us too much. When I landed the knights, they attacked with MDI, LB, and even a pike.

And the reason I'm concerned with Greece is because they are the only civ that can really threaten us. We all know how inept the ai is with amphibious landings. Besides, I'll be surprised if Greece stays at war with America, especially since Sumeria landed a few knights during my turns (very good for us).
