But a treatment done five years ago shows real promise. Five years ago! Progress in this field is awfully rapid.

Please note that the cell used here were from bone marrow. So even though many members of the UN want to ban therapeutic cloning (which is foolish), this technology will flourish regardless.

Stem cells from the bone marrow of patients with severe cases of lupus can help reverse the course of the chronic inflammatory disease when transplanted back into the same patients, according to a study published on Tuesday.

Of 50 patients who underwent the procedure, half were disease free after five years, doctors at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago said. Those involved in the study had either life-threatening or organ-threatening lupus and had exhausted all treatment options.

Heck, I don't even know what causes Lupus, but I'm pleased to see that it's 50% cured.

According to Wiki, it's an autoimmune disease.

I first thought it was a very weird name for a disease, but then I came to think of 'cancer' ...

According to the Lupus Foundation of America, of the 500,000 Americans estimated to have SLE, the disease occurs in 1 of every 600 white women of child-bearing age and in 1 of every 200 black women.

If this cure works (I'm not yet able to find a cost to the cure), we're talking about treating 250,000 Americans

(I used American stats because they were the easiest to find. I found hints that about 15,000 people in Canada suffer from the disease).
