I got a copy of Warlords

The Gamestop at the Galleria in Houston, TX had several copies when I got there a couple hours ago.

Axemen. Looks like they put this in just to counter the axe rush.
Its not a huge counter though. Especially if they didn't adjust the AI to build a lot of axes. You'll just have mixed stacks of spears/axes for your first war now.

Its certainly made Alexander more attractive for his UB now.

Why should chariots do better against melee than axemen (what would be the point of the axemen?). Its probably just against axes. Chariots counter axes but aren't good against much else. Axes take out spears. Spears take out Chariots and Horse Archers. Horse Archers harass and pillage, but aren't good against cities. Archers defend cities, etc.
Indeed horse archers got an additional -10% to city attack to reinforce this division of unit roles. Probably to counter the ability of stables to grant you 5 xp horse archers or chariots out of the gate.

My first game is going to be Korea, my second is to be Genghis Khan.

And finally the Swordsman may come onto the scene too, for city raiding. The chariot does not counter the Sword, so a mix of Axe City Raiders and Swords City Raiders may be best now.

They should have taken this rock-paper-scissor approach in the beginning. I'm satisfied now, though.

I can see why now the Aggressive trait still gives mele/gunpowder units the free Combat I promotion. They really want to get that combined arms setup! I like it :)

I still cannot see a role for the Horse Archer though. All the pillaging can be done by the Chariots. It also makes the Numidian Cavalry a little useless now that Chariots are an Axemen counter (and cheaper). Also, it will make it crucial to get horses now. I wonder if the AI knows this.

Personally, I don't see any value in making Horse Archers at all. Chariots fill in any role that the Horse Archer does.

At last, a counter to boring old "ALL AXES ATTACK!"

Virtual high five anyone :)

And the horse archer is still str 6 compared to 4 for chariots. That is a big difference.
Also horse archers have been granted a withdraw chance just like chariots. Against any foe other than axemen they are superior.

6 strength, 20% withdraw chance. You can use them to attack anything in the open. If its a city you are fighting, you have to go with infantry, but its fine otherwise.

Yeah, I guess the Stables entices you to go for Horse Breeding and I would expect the Stables to help the Chariots too. The strength difference is big. More importantly though, is that the Chariots strength of 4 (they are still 4 aren't they?) will pretty much make it useless at doing anything else.

It makes sense :)

So does anyone know for sure, do chariots get +50% or +100% vs axes? Because if its +50, then axes are still strong favourites in a forest / jungle, but if its +100, then axes just die whatever.....

Edit: Another sudden thought, if the barbs actually make chariots now, you really do need to build spearmen for city defence instead of relying on axes as before......

It makes me sick I cant play the game until next wednesday. The Norwegian release is pushed back, cant understand why. I guess I must leave these forums for a while and go play Galactic Civs, I cant bear the waiting anymore, or reading about players who can play Warlords already....  :( :yuck: :hammer2:

Let's not forget though it was mentioned +50/+100% (whatever) ATTACK bonus against Axes. The Axes will still take out chariots when attacking themselves, right?!

Drew, Chariots get 100%. It is only in the manual that it is stated as 50%. The Civliopedia states it as 100%. Besides, over on Apolyton, it was stated as 100% amongst people who are beta testers. The Chariot is meant to now be the counter to Axemen.

Thanks for that Watiggi, as I'm too busy to get the game till next weekend (maybe Friday night), but looking forward to it lots..just that one fact changes completely the whole early game in oh such a good way...

Looks like someone out there actually DOES listen to us :)

Edit: Yet another thought, its going to make attacking early on even more difficult against a "combined army"..for instance a 3 stack (chariot/axe/spear) vs the same, whoever attacks loses..i.e. axemean first? chariot picks him off, then chariot, spear picks him off, spear get slaughtered by axe...doesn't matter the order, attacker loses...... you're going to need even more of a suicide squad than before...

finally, they have a rock/paper/scissors aproach to early warfare instead of AXEMEN PWNAGE.

Unpromoted:

Chariots pwn axe : 8 vs 5
Axe pwn spear : 7.5 vs 4
spear pwn chariot: 8 vs 4
