I wish the names automatically given to cities were chosen randomly from the list

I'm sorry but I whole heartedly disagree with your point on immersion. In my opinion it's more immersive to overtake these historically significant cities.

It feels good when my esteemed general rides in with my veteran infantry finally overcome the walls of Babylon. Or when we have the remnants of Napoleans government move there capital once we've taken Paris.

Wouldn't you feel alittle less of a War Monterey if you defeated Greece but you never defeated the city of Athens or Sparta to do it?

However I feel that if the Geographic feature or region resides in our border we should be able to rename it. I would love to found the Egyptian empire and the river be named the Nile.

Also if we're the first to traverse a large body of water we should be able to name it on the map such as an ocean or a lake. And if the AI does they should be given a pool of names to choose from based on their civ. same with mountains

While I understand your want to play without mods, this type of issue is the exact reason they made the game so easily moddable. Small 'fixes' that are more personal preference than game-breaking mechanics are supposed to be added as mods. What you should really be asking for is for them to fix mods and achievements! ;)

Of course, everybody gets their immersion from different places. For some people it's reproducing history or drawing heavily from it, for some it's creating different what-ifs scenarios and seeing alternate histories that are more far out. I have to say that in all your examples, whether the big cities I capture are called Babylon or Sparta doesn't matter to me. It matters more to me if it's always the same. Civ already has a huge multitude of options when you go to the "Advanced options" menu, a lot of it has to do with the different ways in which people want to experience the game.

Yes of course, I've thought it should be like that too. But in a way, maybe it'd be a bit too easy to create a mod that just unlocks achievements the instant you use it I suppose. I don't know. I'd like both things!
