I'm sorry but I whole heartedly disagree with your point on immersion. In my opinion it's more immersive to overtake these historically significant cities.
It feels good when my esteemed general rides in with my veteran infantry finally overcome the walls of Babylon. Or when we have the remnants of Napoleans government move there capital once we've taken Paris.
Wouldn't you feel alittle less of a War Monterey if you defeated Greece but you never defeated the city of Athens or Sparta to do it?
However I feel that if the Geographic feature or region resides in our border we should be able to rename it. I would love to found the Egyptian empire and the river be named the Nile.
Also if we're the first to traverse a large body of water we should be able to name it on the map such as an ocean or a lake. And if the AI does they should be given a pool of names to choose from based on their civ. same with mountains
