Idea/Project : Vox Populi 3rd and 4th Unique Components

What do you think about adding new unique components to the civilizations of VP ?

  • I think it is too soon : balancing VP should stay the priority for now

  • I consider that VP is quite balanced, and I don't want new UC to hurt the balance

  • I think adding new UC would be an error : two UC per faction is enough, period

  • A lot of work will have to be done, but I'm not against the idea

  • I think it is a good idea : 2 UC per civilization is not enough for me

  • My opinion is not represented by the responses above (so I'll describe it in the comments)

I could code Poland. I'm not experienced civ coder, but I coded something else in my past. Any instructions and examples of codes from VP are welcome. That would really help me.

Also I will try to make Voi Flag Icon and all civilopedia entries. Only unit texture, unit picture and building picture will left. Of course someone will need to check if it is well written, well coded without any bugs, because as I said I'm learning sql writing in civ.

We could ask @Pouakai for Voi picture and animation from his Slavs civilization and obtain Barbican picture from @mikeburnfire.

Lastly, okay, there is a SERIOUS lack of consistency on whether culturally relevant names are used or anglicized versions. Why refuse to call the ball court a pitz court, and yet call a stave church 'Stavkyrka'?
About spelling consistency. I checked this and we should call those things as follows:
-eng. = lat. - Latifundium
-eng. - Field of Mars; lat. Campus Martius.
I really didn't focused on what type of names were used in VP, but I think there are all english names. So we should keep to that.

I would say the opposite actually. Where it does not conflict with the existing civ 5 base, it seems like G has tried to use the endemic language for units and buildings

examples of VP use of endemic language:
Ger instead of yurt
Naga malla
instead of war elephant
Tabya
instead of cobworks

Where VP has used english names instead of the more appropriate endemic names is when those buildings/units have been used in the base game and were simply left alone.

examples of Firaxis' favouring of English names:

Inca Slinger - Huaraca
Floating Gardens - Chinampa
Jaguar - Ocelotl
hodensote - longhouse (the Iroquoian endonym for their people is "Haudenosaunee; People of the Longhouse")
Foreign Legion - Legion etrangere

This has created a situation where I think each individual modder can make their own call, but you could bear in mind that endemic language is probably more consistent with VP, while anglicizing is more in line with vanilla

I think anglicizing should be on a case-by-case basis. Sometimes an anglicized name would be much more recognizable than an endemic name, and in other cases, anglicizing would just be silly. (Conquistador, anyone?) It’s very subjective, so I agree that individual modders should make their own calls. For me, since this is a game for an English-speaking audience, my main consideration would be what would be easiest for an English-speaker to pronounce and remember while being recognizable as a culturally distinctive entity.

Likewise, there are lots of considerations when choosing what to call them.

Is the name distinct? I knew what a chinampa was before playing civ. I had to look up floating garden because those words aren't distinct enough in their use. I saw that the first time and thought civ was implying that the Aztecs had invented hydroponics.

Is the unit/building referred to that in common English parlance? I know what the Fields of Mars are, I had no idea what the Campus Martius was.

Does changing the language to English rob the thing of its cultural distinction? Referring to a Hodensote as a longhouse makes it harder to distinguish from an Inuit/Haida/Danish longhouse, each of which is very unique in its construction and cultural background, though similar in use.

Does the use of English in some way make the thing less cool/fun? Entirely subjective, but consider the winged hussar, which in polish are simply called 'husar'. Much less interesting, and harder to distinguish from the Austrian hussar.

And of course, if there is literally no English version of a thing (Chu ko nu, conquistador, encomienda), or if the original word no longer exists (Babylonian bowman, immortal)

If I may suggest something, we should close this thread as it stands and copy OP information to blue ghost's post to summary table (he volounteered to be new project coordinator). Theres now very good table with task management. Then every change could be easily put into the table and could be seen without moving from thread to thread like i do this now. Blue ghost will be responsible for updating changes to 1st post of the new thread. Every new balance suggestions should be posted in new thread. Same thing is with files ready to tests.

Hello everyone.
It has been quite a long time since my last message on this topic. Unfortunately, I've been ill these last months (I won't give too much details but I've not been able to advance in my projects nor my studies)... Now, because I've become very busy repairing the problems my sickness has created, my situation doesn't allow me anymore to work with you on this modmod...

I've read the messages of the participants to this topic, and I agree that some of the UC can be ridiculous in their concept or overpowered. I at least hope that ideas can be used by more fortunate members of this forum.
If another topic on the same matter exists, I would like my topic to be merged with this one, and, if ideas expressed here are used, that the names of all the participants are shown (mine among the other, I just wanted to be a catalyst).

I hope that, when the time comes, a balanced modmod will be made to bring more UC to VP.

Have a good day everyone, and be healthy.
