This was triggered by another thread talking about defending against a stack of assassins that keep killing your catapults. That always was a bit irritating because I just picture a guy in a cloak stabbing at a piece of wood.

Then I remembered that assassins will no longer kill ships in port etc... which then led me to think, why not have a saboteur unit? This would be closer to the old school spy...

Make assassins no longer kill siege weapons but add a saboteur unit that targets siege weapons, ships in port, airships, as well as a small chance to be able to destroy a building (ie city walls) if used against an enemy city...

Thoughts?

totally agreed! btw, I think that assassins and other units with the marksmen promotion should not target "the weakest unit" , but units with channeling/hero promotions instead. that way they'd be no longer tricked and waste time killing scouts and warriors ( it sounds as a cheap workaround to me ) . you'd probably have to make guardsman easier to get then ( combat I maybe? ) and maybe a national limit of 12 for assassins to keep them from being overpowered I guess.

I understand that in the middle ages it was hard to keep a large network of spies and assassins running without betrayal and other nasty occurrences. Making assassins/shadows a national unit: it's a good thing. Perhaps Svartalfar hunting lodges (+1 each) and/or the Eyes and Ears network raises this number (+4)

I like this idea but i think it should be extended to reducing the hammers built for buildings too. How would you defend against these guys? Using see-invis units?

I don't like this idea. We don't need a unit that's THAT specialized. With a saboteur in the second half of the game, I could only basically use it attack catapults. The game doesn't need any more redundant units for the sake of making the game (and the AI) more complicated and confused.

well then how about as a function that assassins have? hate the unit, but what do you think about sabotage?

Well, the idea would be that the saboteur has a chance to attack buildings. Maybe make them HN by default like the original spies. I used to use them to bomb city walls and other defense buildings before trying to crack a big city. Granted, there are a lot more ways to damage enemy units here than just brute force attacks...
