Here is the question:

Assuming you were physically fit and had no mental health issues, would you serve in the military if you were drafted?

Personally, I would be getting the hell out of the U.S.A. as soon as possible, but I would like to hear other's opinions on the subject.

I'd leave. I have relatives in a former communist country that would let me live with them. Ill be damned if I am going to die in some Arab hell-hole.

I looked for ways into the military and it didn't quite pan out....so I can't really say I volunteered, can I? Not even the application to West Point would save that.

But I'd stick around and do what they needed me to do.

You assume too much Mr. Capashen. ;)

Personally, I'm with you. I fight and risk death for no one (except maybe my children, yet unconceived).

id sneak my way into the Staff HQ. Im not going on the field.
Says the one with the Xiahou Dun avatar...

But yes, I gather most of us here are intelligent enough that we would not be sent to the front lines. Or maybe even the field at all.

Here is a question. What is better, to flee America to dodge the draft, or peacefully fight the draft in America even if that means facing prison or whatnot?

I live in a country with conscription and I do serve, because I don't like going to jail. I wouldn't server if I didn't have to.

A draft to attack another mideast country? Absolutely not. I just have no ability to separate the world into "us" and "them" along traditional lines which are used to justify war. I'm either too naive or too intelligent to understand this way of thinking, I've never figured out which. It is surprising to me that Americans, living in a nation of immigrants, can toss that out to decide who the enemy is. So I'm paralyzed in a neutral position.

If this were 1939 I would gladly fight, if it was the war on terrorism? pfft, hell no, if I was american I would seriously consider disabling myself.

Are you kidding? To leave the country of course. You know what happens to good looking young men like me in prison? :crazyeye:

If you want to disable yourself, don't cut off your shooting finger. They'll just teach you to use your other hand. This happened to one of my teacher's friends.

That's disgusting. People actually permanently disable themselves on purpose? Isn't it easier to leave the country and never come back? I know there's a whole lot that happens in the world, but I never even considered that people do this. Wouldn't Americans, in theory, be fighting for democracy? And the way to avoid this great honor is to mutilate oneself? I'm also still amazed that people consider the US to be a democracy and not a police state, but that's a different topic entirely.

Sorry, the kind of democracy you Americans seem to be fighting for in Iraq and Afghanistan these days is something I would rather see end then fight for.

The novel Johnny got his gun taught me one thing: dying for an ideal is stupid, id rather live in tyranny than die for nothing.

I was thinking some people might think it more honorable to stay in the country and fight for what you think is right, rather than running.
