Depends on the war. If my country was in dire threat of invasion, or a situation similar to WWII occurred I would probably serve, but try to serve in a non-military post. If it wasn't either of those situations I would not answer the draft.

It's not bad...combine the US that volunteered and those that would go if drafted, and you have about a quarter of the population. Of course, this isn't scientific, and there are some either too old to draft (for now) or too young. Still, with the proportions, the US would wield a very large force, also considering many of those would be in support roles, which may bring in more people not quite ready to get shot at.

You are right that in a WW, or actually any war that threatens the country you live in, people will feel otherwise.
Countries use conscription only when it's absolutely nessesary, and then - people come.

I divided the poll into its' 3 parts (1-3, 4-6, 7-9) and tried to conclude.
The first 2 are where no immediate danger exist or the army is big enough without using the population.
The third is countries that HAVE conscription, and so are in danger anyway, and the people feel threatened.
In this situation, most would go to war. Me included.
I haven't fired a shot in 7 years!!

But lets say that you are conscripted, and send into another country, what would you do ? Does your moral have higher ''criteria" then obey order. Would you oppose a dictature governement at the risk of your own life ? Can you sacrifice yourself for your principle ?

For my principles, I think I could. It's very hard to talk about it when we have the feeling in times of "relative" peace, however, I think I could go to war to defend my principles or values.

This being said, I'm not sure I would go simply to defend the interests of my government, which is a totally different idea. For instance, I'm not sure I would find the strength to defend some kind of dictator in Africa or elsewhere simply because that dictator fits with the French government agenda.

Sorry Boogaboo if you take wrong what I've said. If I mentionned Israeli girls, it's simply because the military service is mandatory for them (2 years IIRC). In France, women have never been drafted, however, we are a larger country where women are usually used in factories during world wars.

Actually, I've seen a documentary on Tel Aviv recently. It's weird to imagine a whole youth being sent for 2 or 3 years at the Army. Some of them going to Palestinan checkpoints. Well, anyway, on that documentary, they were saying that after the military service, many young people were fleeing to India during several months to take some drugs and stuff. I understand that. We definitly need an escape after living things like that.

Anyway, what a weird country is yours . If I had times, I think I would go there for a while.

Would they draft a non-US citizen living in the US with green card?

This was a while ago, but I'm going to respond to it anyway... The mandatory service bill on the floor in the US (HR 163, I think) states that "citizens and residents" will be required to serve -- that means yes. It also goes on to include people living in Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. There is also no condition barring women from being "drafted" (though manual service is somewhat different, as everyone must serve) as well as no condition for objectors. Nonetheless, the bill is actually being considered.

EDIT: Being legally blind (terrible myopia, astigmatism and colorblindness put together), I don't have to worry about the bill. I'm physically unfit
