If everyone in the world could read one book...

The Holy Bible!

Surely not the autobiography of Commander George Lincoln Rockwell, as published clandestinely in a collection of children's hymns?

Book: Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy.

Reason: It is a good book. :)

I'll hold Jorge's proposal as my #2.

Don Quixote is a great story, yes, but would it make the world a better place if everyone read it?

while i tend to agree with you in theory, in practice i know that that statement isnt true.

when we read that book in 10th or 11th grade i thought it was great and (like you) though that it would apply to prety much everyone's world.

however, 90% of the class was completely oblivious of the point of the book.
"why did the pigs start walking on two legs?, there's no way that can happen" was proly the most common response to the book in that class.
I agree with you, but I think one has to assume that for the purposes of this discussion, stonesfan means everybody in the world who is a reader and is accustomed to thinking.

It's better a book that doesn't try to do that. People tend to misunderstand things. Just look at the Bible for example.

Hey, we can dream, can't we?

While most people's thoughts are usually centered around sports and putting up better christmas decorations than the neighbor, I'd like to believe that a spark of intellect exists out there.

My point exactly Jorge. :) Over ambition is not always for the best, eh? Better give them entertainment.

Jorge, but if we avoided complex things that people might misunderstand, we might as well burn all the books and sit around watching nonsense like Survivor or Joe Millionaire:lol:

That's more or less what I was trying to put into words.

It's fine to 'turn your brain off' for some simple entertainment, but one shouldn't base a philosophy out of it! :D

I'm the farthest thing from a starry eyed idealist.

You are the foot of a starry eyed idealist?

As for which book, the answer is simple. Puckoon.

Don Quijote is hardly "simple entertainment" nor a TV-show.
There is no such book that will make the world a better place all in all. Even the most through thought and non-violent book can be twisted in the hands of the wrong persons and thus lead to destructive and inconsiderant acts.

Not all of them can.

Thats right. Thats why I hate when people say that they never talk about religion and politics because people get upset. So they get upset, so what? Maybe if they get used to thinking, after awhile they'll be able to do it without hurting themselves:crazyeye:
