... what attributes would you look for (in the philosophy, leadership, membership, etc)? Which would you avoid?

I'd only join a cult where I am the leader. I'd avoid any cult where I am not the leader.

Red flags for cults:
  • Asking you to give money
  • Restricting one's comings and goings
  • Providing the leader with young girls

This is the reply I came here to give, and since I've been beaten to it there's not really much to say.

Well, one thing...are you charismatic as a public speaker? If not, would you consider a position as one of my top lieutenants?

If I've learned anything watching movies, it is that the top lieutenant always gets killed by the Evil Overlord.
"I know I am paranoid, but am I paranoid enough?"

Who said I was going to be an evil overlord cult leader?

Well cults are rarely non-evil.

I should be their god.

One of the major themes in Frank Herbert's Dune novels is "beware of the charismatic leader". The reason is that even the most benevolent-minded leader with the best of intentions can become corrupt, and of course we know the dangers of the already-corrupt charismatic leader.

If I were going to join a cult, it would have to look very unlike a cult, possibly so much so that the label just wouldn't fit anymore. It isn't only the leaders of cults that I find baffling and disturbing, it's also the followers. Who are these people who have this capacity for irrational devotion? I would have a difficult time even being the leader of a cult, because I would constantly be wondering "What the f is wrong with these people?"

The idea of joining some kind of collective doesn't immediately send me running for the door, but that isn't the same as a cult. And anyway, I've yet to see one that I've actually wanted to join, so it may be purely hypothetical in the end.

People who join cults lack imagination and require that someone else provides it for them
I have imagination so I would never see the need.
But being a leader of one might have some advantages.

Maybe one where I could trade production of useful goods for the opportunity to play in somebody else's pretend sandbox.

I don't really think anyone ever sets out thinking "I'm going to go join a cult today ... ", it's something you sort of get sucked into, and you don't even realize you're in a cult. Cults use mental and emotional abuse to make your feel dependent on them, and cut you off from positive outside influences. Usually, you're in a dark place and someone makes you feel they can help you out of it, and it feels really good at first (and that's how you get sucked in)

I don't know why anyone would even think about this, it's purely self destructive. I feel it's like asking "What kind of abusive boyfriend would you like to have?", or "How would you like to be tortured?", or "What terrible disease would you want to contract?"
