IGN Preview and Video (04/08/10)

5 social policies is correct. It was 6 at one point, but it was changed. :)

As for the map size, there are larger sizes than what IGN mentioned, don't worry! I previously confirmed to you guys that it was possible to play against 22 opponents in a single game, and while that number could conceivably change, the final number will be much closer to that than 12. :)

Personally I find this preview far too hectic, like a Gen Y MTV video. In a few minutes they rush through a lot of stuff, use units to smash each other. A bit hard to appreciate what civ usually stands for. But I guess the kids will like it.

The graphics are way better than Civ 4, I would like some clearer differences of terrain though, everything looks a little too brownish, but that was the same with vanilla 3. Hope it can be modded

Really only an aesthetic thing, but many people wondered if rivers merged and there are a few shots of rivers merging in this video.

Blame that on IGN I guess, I think they produced that video. Although 2K might have had some say it what they could or couldn't show. No footage of the tech tree for example, even though it is mentioned in the article.

Is this multiplayer-specific, or will there be a way to get extra computer opponents beyond the 18 civilizations available? I'm picturing Montezuma's Stunt Double, King of the Emergency Backup Aztecs.

haha, but seriously, it looks like Civ 5 may have a seasonal change similar to Total War?
There are several different terrain tilesets, and potential differences in latitude (tundra mountains versus grassland mountains). The vast majority of Civilization turns last a year or more; seasonal changes wouldn't make any sense.

Very true! Didnt consider the length of one turn!

Yeah im guessing the newest video is set in a terrain style with mountains without ice, if we moved continents in the demo you would see ice covered peaks and different terrain styles, their is 3 styles I think, not sure which one was utlisied there.

What about the choosing the map? In the initial build of Civ4, there wasn't a map script for a random pangaea-or-continents-or-archipelago map. You had to pick a random map for a specific one of the three. The fully-random script was added until later (can't remember if it was a patch or an XP).

How come this thread shows up as moved in the discussion forum?

Edit: Hmm.. It doesn't do that anymore; perhaps someone fixed that; ignore this post.

Is it me or do we see archers bombarding adjacent units in that video?

Yes, looks like they use normal strength for defense only. More interesting would be to see a ship combat - from early videos they seemed to always use ranged attack as well, which make ships NEVER user their normal strength?

The rivers still look kind of "blah" but the rest of the terrain looks stunning.

Thanks for posting this. :goodjob:

Rivers look MUCH better in this build.

I watched the HD video and could see that rivers actually had a graphical "flow" effect to them (not sure if this has been observed in past videos). This suggests the rivers are complete or getting close to it, IMO.

I'm not exactly a fan of how they look, but in the end I don't actually care that much. They look a bit more of a fluorescent blue opaque liquid than real rivers. It could be reflection of the sky but it doesn't look that way. I thought it would be impossible to do but they actually look a bit more cartoony than civ4's rivers.

The archers appear to be in a tile right next to some enemy units and they attack said unit, but the defending unit just cowers under their shields rather than trying to inflict any damage on the archers. (about 1:15 on the youtube video)

Looks that way to me as well. Is it a problem?

If archers can bombard 2 tiles away, I'd expect them to be able to do it 1 tile too.

I really think that combat in adjacent tiles should always leave the attacker the risk of being dealt some damage.

We can't say without playing the actual tactics. For me, current system makes archers valuable at the first line sometimes, but very risky, since they can't move after the attack. Suppose this adds to tactic variation.

I'm more concerned with naval battles, as I wrote.

I also think attack strength isnt decreased when a unit is damaged so the damaged melee unit would still be able to take out the archer
