How is SSBM not the greatest game ever?

Because it is not even in the top 100 as far as Gamerankings' averages go (which, BTW, are the averages of every websites' scores for the game). SSBM has a 90%, and without rounding up it's not even 89.9%.

Even World of Warcraft and Super Mario Sunshine have higher averages.

Although Gamerankings' order could be considered to have critical faults. For example, Super Mario Sunshine is higher than Rome: Total War, Shadow of the Colossus, Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings, Alpha Centauri, Viewtiful Joe, Call of Duty, and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. And Super Smash Bros. Melee is not even in the top 200. If you wanted to know (this is to whoever said Super Smash Bros. Melee is the greatest game ever), one website gave it a 5/10.

The big one, of course, is that the people giving out these scores don't know crap, or at least don't know enough to have an opinion worth citing as an authority.

The only site I'm aware of that I would give any particular value to would be GameSpot, and even they aren't perfect.

By the way, why are you so concerned with these lists? They can be fun to bring up once in a while, but you give them much more time than they deserve. Just think for yourself a bit - what games do you like? Why do you like them? That could make for some worthwhile content, but a plain list from IGN[orant].com is, as several have pointed out already, totally pointless.
