IGN's Top 100 Video Games Lists Comparisons

Online? It's no where near as fun beating the crap out of idiots on the net than it is to beat the crap out of your friends. Sure, I've probably played more hours of Counter Strike than SSB Melee, but the quality of time playing SSB Melee is much better than the time I've played any game online.

Highly agreed.

The big problem of this kind of lists is that they usually don't tell how the "greatest"/"best" game is measured. For example, if you ask me the best game _to play_ of all time, I'd say Civilization IV. But, if you asked me, what is the most important, influential game of all time (i.e. the one I would least want to have never existed) the first Civ would be above IV. And the in the first place would be some old revolutionary game, Pac-Man, Pong, Space Invaders ...? I still don't think these games are the best games _to play_ ever made.

I cannot even agree that multi player is the most important part of all great games. Deus Ex had a very stinted and touchy MP scene, but that is not why I still replay it.

raketooy also makes a good point that 'overall' lists are weak and controversial. Many of the gaming magazines did good by separating games into appropriate categories. PC gaming is diverse enough that some genre greats will be hated by non-genre fans.

The answer is Super Mario Bros., as without it, video gaming would have probably ended up as a failed industry. Of course, that would probably be positive in my opinion.:p

Like I said with SSBM, Civ4 is definetely not the best video game ever, no matter what condition. It's definetely my pick for 3rd best video game I own, after Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Galaxy.

I seem to own around 75% of all those games:) .... Are these various lists complied as being 'infulentual' games or simply 'popular'? Every gamer will have a gripe along the lines of 'why isn't x on it?' (myself being one of them, of course;) ) If they are public driven, there will be only a smattering of votes for anything over, say 6 years old (with very occasional exceptions)

How can Elite be missing from any multi-format game list? Or Populous?

These moved the state of the art foward, half the games on the lists are just nice iterations. No real tec or creative leap.

Probably because all these lists aren't very good

Yeah, I always wonder why StarCraft, which IGN gave a 9.5 to, and System Shock 2 (9.4) are ahead of Metroid Prime (9.8). And they gave World of Warcraft a 9.1, but left out certain games that they rated higher, such as...

The remake of Sid Meier's Pirates! (9.2)
Command and Conquer: Generals (9.3)
Civilization III (9.3)
F-Zero GX (9.3)
Pikmin 2 (9.3)
Age of Mythology (9.3)
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (9.3)
Civilization IV (9.4)
Sonic Adventure 2 (9.4)
Company of Heroes (9.4)
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six (9.4)
Unreal Tournament 2004 (9.4)
The Sims 2 (9.4)
The Sims (9.5)
Homeworld (9.5)
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri (9.5)
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (9.5)
Metroid Fusion (9.5)
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (9.5)
Super Smash Bros. Melee (9.6)
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (9.6)
Unreal Tournament (9.6)
Black & White (9.7)
Halo 2 (9.8)
Soul Calibur (10)

Even worse is that I checked Gamerankings for the total averages, and StarCraft was a 93.1% while Civilization IV was a 93.2%. Super Smash Bros. Melee was about 90%.

That's because in a gaming magazine typically only one person scores and reviews a game (rarely two), but when they do massive lists like this the whole staff chimes in.
