I'm getting a new Dell soon. Should I wait for Vista?

AMD Athlon 2700+
1GB PC2700 RAM
Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB
20GB partition on a 180GB Seagate SATA hard drive

I bet that is a better computer than most people in the world have.

I'll probably have Vista installed on my machine shortly after it is released and I get hold of a copy. Will I use it? Probably just as much as I use Windows now (2-3 hours a day).

You're actually gonna buy one? The only way to really test its full potential is Vista Ultimate and imho that isnt worth it

I don't see why people dislike linux, what is wrong with it?
Same situation with a Mac, you cant play any of the latest games.

Pfft. You're just a kid. You don't know any better. ;)

That is (almost) true. But it's only important if you are a gamer. (Which, admittedly, is a huge percentage of our posters.) When you want to use your computer for even semi-serious work, and get tired of all the reboots, and paying an arm and a leg for the privilege of "renting" buggy software, you may see the light. ;)

2GB just to run. Damn.
I won't be getting Vista for ages in that case.

I can play both Civ3 and Civ4 on my Linux computers, those are late enough for me.

I'm an old fogey only interested in TBS games.

Yes, Transgaming has a database of games supported by Cedega, and both Wine and Codeweavers have databases of programs also.

I was thinking of gettng a new computer for myself and now after seeing this I will try and get my new computer ASAP and not wait for vista. I was thinking of asking a similar question to the OP, but now I realise that I do not need it. Thanks guys for this info.

Dont get a dell. Get a custom built computer.

The packages they put together are crappy and its cheaper to buy parts seperatly.

Not always though. i have found that they are often open to a bit of hagling. I emailed them with a spec and asked what discount they can offer. Got a few quid of them. lol

For desktops its still better to build your own. That stands true for almost all cases, since it will most often still be cheaper and you have greater choice. The only reason that companies like dell exist is to serve to the average Joe who doesnt know a processor from a video card and such. Laptops on the other hand are a different story. A good laptop can often come from dell or hp. Infact I have a friend who just got a laptop from HP and its quite nice too

I just got one from HP myself, rather nice. Only downside is they charges me tax at the point of sale.

What was yours? My friend got a dv9000 i think. Thats about all that i know besides the basic specs for it

Transgaming with their list for Cedega seems a lot better than the other two.

For games you're right. Codeweaver's Crossover Office specializes in making productivity apps run on Linux but I understand they are venturing into gaming with their next release.
