ImageShack has been ruined. What are some good alternatives?

In short, abuse -- without registration there is no recourse, and its costing us lots and lots of resources to police anonymous images, just to give you some data, 1 out of 10 unregistered users will upload either porn or some content that we end up removing due to violation of terms of use, but only 1 out of 1000 registered users do that. Photobucket has the same issue, they have tinypic that does not require registration with some heavy restrictions.

Secondly, we can backup images that are from registered users, we can't do it for anonymous users. Which is overall an improvement of quality.

Fair enough. Still, as a rambling man who doesn't want to be tied down to an image hosting site, I shall use other sites for my images. (I can hear you singing "There's A Tear In My Beer" right now. :p)

Why are you here?
That question has been pondered by many philosophers. :)

There's a simple explanation, really:

"File this under 'I' for 'Imagehosting website founders'."

Non-registered images will stay (from people without accounts), but we do not guarantee their safety due to breakage of hardware or any other downtime due to any sort of technical failures.

That's a relief, I've anonymously uploaded thousands of Images (all legal, I swear :p) and didn't want to see them all be deleted with all the registered users' images above 500.

I'm still kind of annoyed that you're retro-actively applying the 500-image limit policy and deleting all the old ones, though, because that means that if anybody wants to keep those images up, they either have to pay for a subscription or spend lots of time uploading those images elsewhere.

I subscribed for the premium basic. It was $2 a month. Will the price be expected to increase.

Also will there be implemented some way to check for duplicate images? I have a lot of those because it was stressful to go looking for one picture among a bunch of others to re-post it.

Price is not expected to increase.

Check for dups -- no feature like that right now.

That might work for you, but it goes both ways, if you care about your images actually staying up.

You get what you pay for.

Expected unlimited space for free is completely ridiculous.
Bullcrap. It is perfectly reasonable to expect unlimited free space. The reason unlimited free space isn't the norm is because people are selfish, greedy, money-hungry, money-driven.

We collectively apologize for Plutonian, who we know won't do so himself, because he just gets angry about everything.

He did sort of have a point, though, that we should have no reason not to expect unlimited free space if we've always been given unlimited free space.

I've always considered Photobucket to be a pretty good alternative. They make it quite easy to embed images, and the viewer of the images gets an annoyment-free experience. They did add occasional auto-play video ads when uploading awhile back, which is kind of annoying, but they are mutable, and there are no pop-ups, so I don't consider it too bad. Their free service is limited to 500 MB, but that's almost certainly going to be more than 500 images. They also cut back awhile ago - it used to be 1 GB free. Shortly after they changed, I was at something like 571/500 MB, which meant I couldn't upload more, but on the other hand what I already had didn't get deleted. So I couldn't complain too much.

The delete-after-6-months imgur thing would make me hesitant to use their service. That won't be a problem for awhile, but then, two and a half years from now, you might well start getting e-mails from people viewing your old pages and being like "where's the images???". And it would only be some images that would be deleted... just a mess to keep track of, and a "whack-a-mole" type situation. I also became somewhat wary of the 6-months-and-gone thing after my old Hotmail account got deleted due to too much inactivity. I never really used it so it wasn't a big deal, but I'm kind of glad I hadn't used it because of that. (note, I don't know if they still delete Hotmail accounts like that)

I wouldn't have considered uploading images to any service without an account unless it was purely temporary. Too hard to keep track of later, and you can't really expect the service to keep them forever if they don't even have an e-mail to associate them with. At least with an account, they can send you updates if need be. Without one, things might just happen to your images unexpectedly.

500 images for free is still not bad, even though I'm not a fan of ImageShack myself due to their ads. However, I agree, it's a major minus that images above 500 are being deleted. Of course I wasn't thrilled when Photobucket cut back their free limit, but at least I didn't have to reupload anything. Maybe using multiple services is an option if the images don't need to be modified a lot? On the plus side, $2/month is pretty reasonable. Now that I have a steady income, I could easily afford that if I had used ImageShack... although the extortionate aspect of images over 500 being deleted otherwise would make me reconsider.

While we're on the subject, does anyone know why ImageShack's QuickShot isn't available on ImageShack anymore? It's a pretty good screenshot program IMO, which I've used for pretty much all my Civ screenshots. I keep a copy on my hard drive, and it's downloadable from third-party sites, but it sadly disappeared from the official site a year or two ago. Latest version that I have says, "ImageShack QuickShot 1.52 by MTIN" in the titlebar.

Hey guys, I am one of the ImageShack co-founders, if you have questions about the changes or imageshack in general, you are welcome to ask me here.

Why is your site so terrible? I will never, ever use it (and stopped many years ago) because of the pop-ups, ad links in posts and lack of easy to use enlarge function (it usually ends up creating more pop ups). It makes it unfriendly to use (less revenue from ads never seen) or encourages the use of adblockers (no ad money and they still use your hosting).

IF I really want to save something uploaded I'll use my old photobucket account (despite their repeated awful interfaces) but for everything else I'll stick with imgur.

Here's a question, though not about the policy: Where did you get the idea for the little yellow frog? I quite like that.

We like animals in our family. My brother originally when thinking of a mascott was fund of brightly colored frogs, so we chose one to identify with the company.

Mr. Jacque, why do you plan to delete people's images that have already been uploaded but go over this 500 image limit?

I dont quite remember. I just didnt particularly like it.

I decided to drop ImageShack into AlternativeTo (which is a useful site if you know a program like what you want but don't know how to describe it so you can Google it):

http://alternativeto.net/software/imageshack/?platform=online

Theres some alternatives there. I filtered it to Online as it also had some stuff you installed on a server.

What didn't you like about imgur? That's what I use and I haven't had any problems with it
As for me, the fact that images are deleted if they're not 'used' after 6 months was a bit annoying. Since Imageshack was -at the time- unmetred I chose ImageShack. I also had the toolbar -before it became discontinued- and the Bulk uploader.
