African League Begins Peacekeeping Effort in Vietnam
Warning: Large image
CASABLANCA The African League disclosed their plan for their position in the UNVIFOR force on October 21. Emirati diplomats recently struck a deal with Laotian officials to allow the African League to begin preparing their forces in Laos, Emirati officials have stated through a press conference that the joint military force will be moving out into Vietnam by mid-winter.
The original plan for the African League was to use The Peoples Republic of Sìchuān as their staging grounds but that plan seems to have fallen through. An Emirati senator, who asked to remain anonymous, stated that the Emir abandoned the Sìchuān route after not receiving a response from the new nation. Whatever the reason, cooperation from the Laotian government has gone a long way in establishing friendly relations with the United Emirates and a trade treaty between the two countries is currently in the works.
The joint operations of the African League will be spearheaded by the United Emirates and the Republic of New Rhodesia who will be providing troops for front-line combat with the Vietnamese warlords and for securing the areas that have been pacified. The United Kingdom of God will be providing non-combat personal and support to the operations which are expected to follow in after an area has been secured. The African league will be pacifying northern Vietnam, specifically military zones A and B. Control of the operations will start off with the Emirati forces but as the forces near the JCZ it will be handed off to the Rhodesians in order to avoid any possible confrontations; still the joint forces are adopting a cautionary policy towards the Japanese and are prepared to fight should they be fired upon first.
But with the first test of the African League comes doubt and criticism. Protests in Casablanca have started outside of the United Kingdom of Gods embassy; the protesters demanded that the government denounce the UKG for not participating on the same level as the UE and Rhodesia who were risking their own sons for this operation. Outside of the Parliamentary building reporters questioned Grand Vizier Nasser Kalib, while he declined many of their questions he did leave them with one quote There is no doubt that our time in Vietnam will test our young alliance, I can only hope that these fires of war will forge a bond that will become unbreakable.
Another Charter Fails, but Interim Rules Set to Expand
UN HQ The new Texarkan proposal for a charter for the UN has failed to pass, notably with a larger margin than the original Emirati proposal although lack of interest by other countries was mostly to blame for that. The Texarkan proposal was a edited version of the original Emirati proposal that aimed to clarify parts of the Charter, but the most notable change was the most controversial: allowing the UN to own land outside of Antarctica.
An original proponent of the Emirati Charter, the Womens Republic of France decided to vote against the Charter. The United Emirates was also originally cold to the revised version, but after Texarkana implemented some changes to the owning lands section they eventually decided to support the new Charter. However, this was not enough as most members of the UN decided to ignore the Proposed Charter with nearly 18 members abstaining.
Seeing as the only part of the Charter that members could not agree on was the UN limits and the Amendment Voting rules, the United Emirates proposed that the Interim Rules that had been governing the UN since be modified to add the parts of the Charter that every country could agree on. In a press release Emirati representative Malik Al-Derei commented on the current state of the Interim Rules. The Interim Rules were supposed to have served as a transitional guideline for the UN and a charter was meant to have been quickly adopted. However, two proposals later and we are still getting nowhere! Furthermore the UN is starting to play a much larger role in the world today with peacekeeping forces operating in Vietnam. We need to establish a charter that will better enable the UN to handle situations such as that, but until then we should not be throwing out all of the Charter just because we cannot agree on a few parts.
The Expanded Interim Rules was proposed to great success and is set to be the first unanimous resolution in the UN with eleven countries giving their support to it.
Republic of Laos Signs Treaty with United Emirates
VIENTAINE It seems that military access treaties were not the only things being discussed by Laotian and Emirati diplomats in their first meeting in October. The new Economic Development Treaty which is set signed in early November is a sign of the growing friendship between the two countries.
The treaty is meant to take advantage of both Laotian and Emirati assets to help in the economic growth of both countries. Emirati businesses have been given permission to open up manufacturing plants in Laos that will create many new jobs in the nation, with the condition being that Laotians be trained as managers for these plants to avoid just creating low paying jobs in Laos. In return the companies get an access to a cheap labor force and new markets for their goods.
The expected results of this treaty are that many of the consumer goods in the United Emirates will experience a price drop while companies will be able to make a better profit. Meanwhile in Laos many new jobs will be created and investments from Emirati merchants will help get their new economy off the ground as well as provide them with experienced workers and managers. This treaty comes at an opportune time for the burgeoning Emirati middle class as lower prices on many consumer goods will encourage spending and benefit the economy.
However the treaty is not without its critics, many blue collar factory workers have started protesting outside of the Senate building saying that their livelihoods were being threatened by the outsourcing of jobs to poor Laotian workers who would be willing to work for far lower wages than what were legal in the United Emirates. As the protesters began to obstruct traffic and occupy nearby buildings riot police were sent in to confront the protesters. After a four hour face off in which the protesters slowly gave ground to the advance of the riot police with tear gas and water cannons an agreement was struck, the protesters would be allowed to occupy the Harun Memorial Park near the Senate building in exchange for ending their illegal occupation of several buildings and blockades of roads.
Investigation and Punishment for Alleged Japanese Attacks against Peacekeepers
UN HQ As more evidence stacks up against the Japanese in the UN an increasing amount of nations are backing a resolution to suspend Japanese membership in the UN. Suspension of membership while not outlined in the Interim rules is a popular section of the Proposed UN Charters and is being implemented through the loophole of there being nothing against it in the Interim Rules. When the Austrian representative asked for proof of the Japans wrong doings the United Emirates sent information and later Texarkana laid out all of the information it had received, all of which pointed at Japan as being the main culprit and disproving their claim of bad weather being the cause of the lost ships.
However, at Japans insistence of a Investigation team being sent to gather information before they were convicted a new UN resolution was proposed to do so. However in this resolution, proposed by Texarkana, Platonic and Texarkana representatives nearly came to blows about who would be making up the investigation team. The Platonics main complaint was that some nations were being sidelined for no given reason and that Texarkana was being hostile in their responses. However the argument has since died down after both representatives took a break to calm down.
More Algerian Emirates Join the United Emirates
CASABLANCA As Emirati influence grows across the globe it does so at a more local level. Some Algerian Emirs have sought protection in the United Emirates and have signed an annexation treaty.
OOC: Claims in the More Algerian Emirates Join article, two claims were used to pacify two regions as per the guidlines in the UNVIFOR thread.
