Imus from MSNBC in trouble for racist remarks!

This should not be a big news story, I hate our politically correct society where saying something stupid deserves the top story for a week. Imus will probably just disappear from radio and retire with the money he has.

If Imus called your mom or sister a nappy headed ho, do you think he get a free pass?

Completely up to the owners of his station. People are allowed to say idiotic things. Radio DJs quack on and on in my city about how lazy the homeless, even though half of them have jobs. I don't see people getting up in arms about that.

People are allowed to say stupid crap in a free society. In fact, it is an excellent way of quickly identifying who is stupid. The radio station should be free to deal with him anyway they want, but I still don't see how DJs saying offensive, bigoted, and otherwise stupid stuff is profound or even newsworthy.

Do people even bother talking about what Rush Limbaugh says anymore?

Did you guys see the women's basketball team in question?

I would have referred to them as 'whores from around the corner' or some like remark. I applaud Don Imus for coming up with a funnier* and more accurate description.

Of course they are nappy-headed hos.

I really can't stand all of the political correctness in the world today. It is beyond ridiculous.

*Don Imus' primary job is to entertain.

And here is a perfect example of my point, which Mon Mauler was kind enough to demonstrate. If people are allowed to speak like idiots, then you can immediately recognize that they are idiots and can therefore avoid wasting any more time paying attention to them. :goodjob:

I find it funny they had a hot little while girl with straight hair talking about she was insulted on the mic.

Jon,
I am unsure as to how I demonstrated your point. Please elaborate.

In any case, are idiots not entertaining?

Jon,
I'm sorry, but I do not see the correlation between my statements and your point, which is, "If people are allowed to speak like idiots, then you can immediately recognize that they are idiots and can therefore avoid wasting any time paying attention to them." I really would appreciate a reply to clarify my confusion.

Also, if Don Imus' job is to entertain, and idiots are entertaining, as you freely admit, then wasn't Don Imus doing his job?

I think hes telling you your an idiot and he would not be wasting time with you because what you said was idotic yet he keeps spending time on replying to you so I'm not sure.

Because, I personally have nothing better to do... however, if someone were truly pressed for time and had to economize who they paid attention to, then it is very useful information.

Well, like you said, they can be entertaining, too. :goodjob:

Jon,
So you refer to myself and Don Imus as idiots.

How is that worse than Don Imus referring to the Rutgers women's basketball team as 'nappy-headed hos'?

Now, I don't pretend to personally know any of the women on the Rutgers women's basketball team, but I could probably safely assume that they are not 'nappy-headed hos.' Nevertheless, that is the appearance that they project, and Don Imus was specifically referring to their appearance in a humorous context when he made that remark. This is why some of the earlier comments referred to their tatoos and such.

In our present debate you have referred to both me and Mr. Imus as idiots, the definition for which is, "a foolish or stupid person." You say this based on isolated comments from both me and Mr. Imus, without much evidence to support your opinion. It is virtually the same as calling the Rutgers women's basketball team 'nappy-headed hos.'

In fact, Imus' characterization of the team is probably more accurate than your characterization of me and Don Imus. At the very least the team photo of the Rutger's women's basketball team verifies that the majority of them do, indeed, have nappy hair ("kinky or frizzy hair," by definition). Now I doubt that any of them dabble in prostitution on the side, but that has little to do with the current outrage.

The fact that you called me an idiot is much more egregious, for you have absolutely zero evidence to suggest that I am either foolish or stupid. Perhaps I only made the comment, which you bolded, in order to force the current discussion. In that case it certainly was not foolish. As to my level of intelligence, that could be verified in other ways, but it would demonstrate much conceit on my part for me to list my resume in this space.

As for whether Don Imus is an idiot or not there is siginficantly more evidence. I've never been a big Don Imus fan, but I doubt that he is truly an idiot. Certainly, one cannot identify him as an idiot based on the currently debated comments. Now, his lengthy broadcasting career might provide additional evidence as to his idiocy, but I've never listened to Imus enough to know.

What I do know is that this outrage over his comments is much ado about nothing.

The fact that you said they looked like "whores from around the corner", when the only trait you have listed is that they have nappy hair, suggests to me that you are a very bigoted person. For me that is a sign of stupidity.

It wasn't the "nappy-headed" part that was particularly offensive, it was the "ho" part. Your statement suggested you identified with the "ho" part more than anything.

Perhaps you could enlighten me to exactly why they looked like "whores from around the corner"?

If Imus called your mom or sister a nappy headed ho, do you think he get a free pass?

So every major newscaster and the leaders of the black community all are related to some member of the basketball team. Sure I can understand some people being personally upset, but enough to warrant front page stories? I think not.

Exactly. The remarks may have been stupid, but there are 6.4 billion people in the world, and a lot more important stuff is happening to lots of them, somewhere.

You know, what he said was wrong. I don't think it should be such a big deal, but it was bad, and it's appropriate for him to apologize.

But he shouldn't lend legitimacy to an insane anti-Semitic hypocrite like Al "Expel the white interloper" Sharpton by going on his radio show, which is equally if not more hateful than Imus's own.

And people who are saying that this is such a big deal because the victims were black as opposed to white, Hispanic, or Asian - are correct.

Jon,
I am quickly tiring of this conversation because I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that you have not a clue what the outrage over Don Imus' comments is all about. Nevertheless, I will respond to your statements.

The fact that you said they looked like "whores from around the corner", when the only trait you have listed is that they have nappy hair, suggests to me that you are a very bigoted person. For me that is a sign of stupidity.

In fact, I also mentioned the numerous tattoos, which are more prevalent amongst urbanites in general. Moreover, amongst urbanites, tattoos are probably more prevalent amongst prostitutes than other women living in the city. Secondly, although I did not mention this, the women of the Rutger's basketball team also displayed particularly outlandish and ostentatious behavior on the court, including chest-thumping and the like. Now, chest-thumping might not be characteristic of prostitutes, but outlandish and ostentatious behavior surely is.

In addition, being a bigot (defined as "an intolerant person") is radically different from being stupid (defined as "lacking mental acuity"). (And I'm really getting tired of defining words for you.) I'm sure that you could go back through history and find many eminently brilliant people that were bigots. And brilliant people are the very antithesis of stupid people, if you didn't understand the definition of "stupid".

It wasn't the "nappy-headed" part that was particularly offensive, it was the "ho" part. Your statement suggested you identified with the "ho" part more than anything.

First of all, it certainly was the nappy-headed part that caused all of the outrage. The term "nappy-headed" has a connotation in modern America that refers specifically to African Americans, and the current anger at Don Imus is wholly concerned with his so-called "racial insensitivity." However, the word nappy also has a literal definition that absolutely characterizes the hairstyle of the majority of the team. Don Imus' comment regarding their hair was particularly apt.

As to the ho part of the comment, it is merely ancillary, with regard to the outrage. Simply because I first picked up on the team's tattoos and outlandish behavior does not mean that the outrage over Don Imus' comments is over this aspect of his comment. Perhaps Don Imus' vocabulary and mental acuity are simply superior to mine in that he came up with an accurate description of their hair.

All of the outrage is over the "nappy-headed" comment. Please do not delude yourself.

If he had called them nappy-headed *****es or nappy-headed ballers or anything else with the phrase 'nappy-headed' preceding it, the reaction would not have been any different.

For my part, I know that I hear or read the words ho, slut, ***** and whore just about every day in mainstream media from morning talk radio to primetime television to world renowned newspapers to major motion pictures, and similar outrage is never expressed.

I repeat, the current outrage is all about the 'nappy-headed' phrase and the racial connotations that phrase carries.

Perhaps you could enlighten me to exactly why they looked like "whores from around the corner"?

I think I already did in reference to their tattoos and ostentatious behavior.

Here is my take on it. This has nothing to do with Sharpton, Jackson, McCain, nor anyone else other than this Don Imus guy and the ladies on the basketball team. Take even the nappy headed part of the comment away. What are you left with? A "man" with a national radio and television show with a huge audience declared to the world that the young ladies on this basketball team make their living by being paid for sexual services rendered. He basically stated "You are all a bunch of whores." Big man with a show, really showing his manliness attacking some young ladies like that. MSNBC, or whoever he works for, ought to throw his ass out on the street post haste.

EDIT: Oh, and the ladies ought to sue him for defamation of character.

EDIT #2:
I think I already did in reference to their tattoos and ostentatious behavior.
Ever seen a group of drunk Marines in TJ? Go ahead, I dare you to call them whores.
