in defense of base game Britain

I think it is pretty obvious that Britain is not in the base game.

I agree it will be in a paid DLC. The cynical part of me thinks Britain was left out of the base game in order to sell more DLC content

One of the modern ideologies is also Fascism, so one would think that they would also put the nation most known for that in the game, unless they pull a fast one and have modern Italy. :mischief:
The English language and Democracy is already covered by America, and geographically Britian is covered by the Normans in the Exploration Age. Sure you could count the countless other territories of the British Empire as well, but I don't think that's as important considering those places already are covered by America, Mughals, and Buganda in Africa.

Based off of the screenshots we've also seen what looks like a Prussian commander, so I feel that all things point towards Prussia/Germany in the base game. Not to mention we probably know of Frederick the Great to be in the game based off a leak, which also had Catherine. Plus, Catherine will probably want to go into Prussia/Germany as well as one of her historical choices.
There's always the possibility that Frederick will be in the base game without a Germany for him to lead.

Otherwise the Hausa, Vietnam, Rennaisance Italy, and Franks/HRE would have been announced by now.

That's more of a fact that Catherine would have a second historical civ to go to.

But you are right that Frederick only appearing is the least compelling evidence.

Gandhi. The other gap.

In general I share the sentiment that lack of Britain is extremely disappointing. This is only game of course, but we could expect some basic respect for the lore. If you make a game around 1750-1950 and you ommit the Britain, yet you include some unneeded civs like America or Germany then it just does not feel right. America has 3 leaders. It is like a false note.

We could have Gandhi + Britain, instead we have Fred II (the worse one in my opinion) and Germany.
I really think Civ 7 is finally the time they retire Gandhi for good. Even if you consider that India already had a good leader, there’s so many other influential people they could bring instead for a more unique experience.

Nah, if anything civ VII is the one civ where Gandhi makes sense to add, he won't be tied only to India, and he can be added later via DLC, with a meme nuclear memento.

More on topic, I guess this is officially RIP to Britain in base game? To all defenders and hopefuls, it was a valiant effort.

(For the record, even though I’ve been anticipating Russia and Germany/Prussia, I’m not a fan of the outcome either. 31 launch civs with the kind of roster they presented is not good enough)

The nuclear Gandhi meme was dated when Civ 6 launched. I really hope they consider the full history of India and include lesser-known figures, and that’s if they even need a second Indian leader.

It was discussed several times - ironically, Civ7 is the first game where Gandhi actually makes sense as a leader.

I think the best thing to do is to add him in one of the DLC, but without this nuclear meme.

I am suddenly overcome with an urge to begin belting The Star Spangled Banner to the best of my ability...

They could release a Gandhi nuclear persona as a free bonus, so no one would complain they're having to pay for it

Yes, and yes.

But in a game with Machiavelli, José Rizal, and Harriet Tubman, this is the one civ game where Gandhi doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. I also would like more variety an interesting new leaders, (but even in this we got usual suspects like Augustus and Pachacuti) but I bet Gandhi will make it in eventually.

Interesting enough none of the series "mascots" are in the game yet. That will most likely change in the DLCs. I expect someone like Elizabeth and Montezuma to potentially show up with their civs release (Aztec and British). Alexander would make sense for Crossroad of the World, maybe Genghis? Gandhi is the only one I'm not sure about. I also expect Shaka down the line but not anytime soon.

Disappointed that Britain is not a Day 1 civ.

Civilization VII - "Build a DLC monetization scheme that stands the test of time."
I still think it's more "We couldn't finish the British civ in time for launch day so we're shoving them into a DLC the month after".

Because making a new civ for the game takes time and effort on multiple fronts and we're only getting 10 per era anyways.

I personally trust Civ's DLC scheme because 90% of the time they actually contribute enough to the game to be worth buying.

Yeah it's a crazy decision not to have Britain in the base game. They hit every X in '4X', especially in the 19th and early 20th centuries on which the Modern Age is specifically based. The truth is that America is the Anglophone empire that should have been relegated to DLC, but Civ is an American game from an American perspective so that was never going to happen.

On Gandhi, I feel the same way about him as I do about all other non-leaders - not my thing. I'm sure he'll show up eventually, but I'd be fine he didn't.
