• Civ7 is already available! Happy playing :).

in defense of base game Britain

I was just going by the list of cities that they can found in game. I don't disagree with you considering it was the capital of Anglo-Saxon Wessex.
Thanks for the clarification.

If they were going to shoehorn this civ into the game, it would be nice if they executed it well.

No
No no.

We will not be doing that. We will not let you slip to the dark side. Not you.

Repeat after me: "There will not be a fourth age. There will not be a fourth age. There will not be a fourth age. EVER".

:-)
I wish, but Prussia over Germany for the World War Two era pretty much locked in the bad news for me. Really hope I'm wrong, but it seems self evident they're making sure to keep modern country names available for a fourth age at this point.

I'd argue the opposite! If there's one country whose modern history you don't want to draw attention to it's Germany! Prussia lets them dodge having a modern Germany, and still leaves open an HRE or Austria further back.

We've had Germany with WW2 UUs in every single iteration that had UUs to date, including the last. That ship has not only sailed; it's ran into a few icebergs and sank with great loss of life and is now a crumbled pile of rusted metal on the Atlantic floor that will be lost forever soon.

I'm not sure about that, considering a separate Austria and HRE has existed alongside a German civ in the past. HRE could still exist in the Exploration Age even if it was called German Empire in the Modern Age.

The Kingdom of Prussia lasted until 1918. I'd argue that it could still be feasible to have a U-boat as a UU. I think if the civ wasn't called Prussia they would just use the name German Empire in which the uniques would have only gone to the end of WWI anyways.

If you look into the Prussia confirmed thread, you will find a post of mine noting that calling the civ Prussia would work MUCH better if the third era ended around the first world war.

It doesn't. It last to 1950-ish, and make a big deal of the three-way ideological clash as a significant mechanism of the era. At that point, Germany would have been the better overall name...unless they're keeping it back for later, alongside France (thus explaining the nonsense of French Empire)

I mean most Modern civilizations, at least name wise didn't last into WII, with a few exceptions. Siam changed into Thailand in 1939 and I guess arguably Meiji Japan continued on as the Empire of Japan. Russia is essentially Tsarist Russia except for one Soviet Era UU.

I think if they wanted to encompass all of the Modern Age from 1750 to 1950ish, the name Prussia is fine as that is a bigger window where you can find uniques farther back, than the German Empire. Though to me it's not the biggest deal in the world and I would have been fine with either name.

WWII units are tier 3 at the very end of the Modern tree. In the currently play streams, people are not getting to the end of the trees in Antiquity and Exploration; I have not yet seen a single tier 3 unit built in nearly a dozen streams. Assuming Modern Age is the same; if they made WWII German unique units, they would never get built.

I disagree that Prussia is a bigger window or better cover the period. If you count the Kingdom of Prussia within the German Empire, then the German Comfederation and North German Confederation equally count fpr that name. And considering the way the modern tiers are set up (with two tiers for the 1900-1950 period) even counting only 1871 onward Germany covers more of the Modern gameplay.

Then we'll have to pre-emptively manifest the extension of all three ages by adding more techs, units and mechanics in the expansions over a fourth era, don't we? And be VERY clear that we do NOT want a fourth era.

Who's going to make the thread?

PS: "Germany" can also be used as a name for the Holy Roman Empire // Prussia enables a different view to Germany we haven't seen yet, so I don't think it necessarily points at an extra Era being added. :-) Remember, the Katyusha Rocket Lancher is in this Era, and that's a WW-era invention.

How would that solve anything? that would just means people reach tier 3 but never reach tier 4 of the tech trees (or not even tier 3 and 4).

If that ends up being a real problem (and not maybe that people are playing with the mentality they should get the masteries and end up not advancing too much on the the tree), any correction for it would be things aside from adding more to the trees, like: reducing effects on the age progression (there is already an game start option that does it, but maybe the default needs to be reduced), making so techs and civics are cheaper to research or make it so the reducing the total of turns for the age ends up speeding up research.

I'm optimistic that they've accounted for the Modern era lasting longer so it actually feels like you are playing to the end end, thus after the legacy paths you still have to go and build the projects for victory. With all the changes they've made with aircraft carriers and flight commanders they'd want players to be able to use them.

The inclusion of Normans reminds me of the classic game Seven Kingdoms. Good times. And it's much more interesting than another boring iteration of England.
