In RTW, is it possible to upgrade units?

True. But still, they're not MERELY cannon fodder They can still fight, even if not as good as post-Marius units ;) And that's a good enough reason to bring them to battles rather than just disbanding them
That´s a more subtle way of cannon-foddering: If the enemy has a huge army of very heavy and trained units, why not use the old armies to hold them and give them casualties while you ready some Urban Cohorts?

Good point :)

However, what I meant was more than merely taking bites out of the enemy's army. Obsolete units, if used properly and manually (IOW never auto-resolve battles) can do more than just harry and delay; they can win.

Could someone list for me what population level a city needs to be to build all the units?

example:

To build Early Legionary Cohort= [x-amount] pop
To build Triarii= [x-amount] pop

and so on.

Thanks.

Here you go. This is from memory and I haven't been playing for quite some time, so if I forgot/missed any details feel free to correct me.

Excellent work!

edit: Another query: What triggers marius reforms?

All that´s in your head, Sashie? OMG!

lol yea i know what you mean... two weeks to finals. But yea i think the marius reforms are a date triggered event, like the golden horde in MTW. As far as those obsolete units go, i kept a sizeable force (3 full armies iirc) in and around Alesia, and i often checked their stats with the Briton armies in adjacent france ( yea the brits were really owning N europe at this point). In the time it took me to drive all the way around N Africa, and all the years it took the subjugate the Egyptians ( my front resembled the Desert War 1941, back and forth across Cyrencia), my Alesian legions were still superior to their British counterparts.Of course, these were the battle hardened boys who crushed the Iberian peninsula, but the point is that they still outclassed other civ's units, despite having been 'obsolete' for around 20 yearr or so

Romans were historically the only superpower of the ancient world..

Actually I did conducted a little test a while back on triggering Marius. I used some cheats (money, add population and instant completion of construction) to see whether it's a date event or not. On the first turn, I built everything in my capitol all the way till the last building. Sure enough, on the next turn Marius is triggered! Thus it's not a date event, but triggered by your city's level and building.

btw what is the difference between Early Legionary Cohorts and regular Legionary Cohorts? Does it depend on the size of the city?

I don´t know about the requirements, but the Early Legionary Cohorts are 9/17 and the Legionary Cohorts are 9/22. That difference really helps against missile weapons.
