I picked my screen name because it is my name on AOL. Back in the late 90s when I first got dial up internet I signed up for AOL, and had to pick a screen name. My real name was taken, as were several varaints, and in frustration I just picked a random name that popped into my head, which was the name of the last D&D character I had before I stopped playing (back in the mid eightees--I'm old). That character's name was Tholish because it sounded kind of like "foolish" based on the notion that I usually got characters with a low wisdom, and in this case I hadn't--he was a half elf FMC. I also knew a lot of people for whom english was not a first language, and they had a hard time pronounceing "th" so I did that just to give them a hard time.
I picked my avatar, a screenshot of a default Civ IV town (which you never see) because my favorite modding achievement was making a mod in Civ III that had something similar to what Civ IV called cottages. And because I like to play Victoria and cottage spam.
