Don't forget the walking stick and white gloves! :)
Spot on!
The top hats should have been made obsolete way back between 1930s & 1940s.

Spot off! You sir, are an undignified savage who surely could never understand the magnificent feeling of a top hat on your head and a monocle firmly under brow. 'Tis absolutely posh. To the factory with the likes of you, we civilized men shall endeavor to keep the likes of you their, where you are tame. GOOD DAY!

I've got a big bag of crabs here...

Am I the only one who voted for the last opinion? Seriously, those inaugurations burn a lot of needed money. But I ain't an American, perhaps that's why.
P.S.: Top hats are cool and chic.

An inauguration is worth celebrating. It's not really that expensive, considering.

The campaign process, on the other hand, burns a lot of money that could be used for better things.

"Obsolete" implies a loss of function, which I don't think they ever had. In fact, I believe the whole point was to exhibit the ability of a person to get away with wearing such an unnecessarily impractical and extravagant hat. If they wanted practicality, they would've worn a flat cap like most people did.
Although, arguably, this display of impracticality is a function in itself, so perhaps what you mean is that they should have been removed as a symbol of the dissolution of the class system which they represented? Not that it was dissolved, mind you...

Or am I simply reading far too deeply into an off-hand comment?
