Is there a way to increase how fast you research techonologies in the game? I don't mean mods or anything like that, but just how quickly you advance through techs. Relative to the AI, I'm always behind although I have 100% allocated to research.

On a side note, what does putting money into culture do?

The best way to increase your research rate is build up your commerce. Open up your border for foreign trade routes, build plantation on those luxury ressource tiles and work it, work those coast and riverside tiles first, build improvements give +commerce. the buildings that add % research and %commerce are all based on the base commerce your city produces. so even if u built all +% research building and are at +200% research, but if you only built farm and mines on your tiles, you will have low research. on other hand if you built watermill windmill towns and work those coast squares, your research rate will be high even if you don't have all the +% research buildings built.

If you want to get more research you have to take advantage of your rullers attributes. If you are Finace, you get more Gross money to stick into research. Or if you are industry, choose to tunnel your productions into research. Or get your great people rate up and do nothing but use your great people to give you a free tech advance.

KNow what your Civ is good at and hit that advantage to the max. Most all the advantages can be turned around to give you better research.

I don't see how its possible to be behind an AI in technology, either you're neglecting science buildings (observatories, libraries, scientist specialists, religious buildings, general economy) or simply not expanding. You're lucky to be on 100% in research for me its usually 80-90% in the later stages but that might be because of my civic choices.

I'm pretty much always behind atleast one AI in tech through most of the game. I dare you to outtech the AI on Immortal.

Are your population comparable to the AIs? If so, then you've either got too few science buildings or too little commerce. Cottages are the key to having a profitable civilization. If your population is smaller, you might want to consider taking some of theirs. I'm sure they won't mind if your armies borrowed their cities for a while.

You can out tech the comp on Immortal pick a small contents map or one size up with 2-3 comps. They can't expand like crazy due to the size of the contents and to go any further they need transport ships. If you play your cards right you should have your content to your self quickly and manage to spread to all the other islands before the rest of the comps do. Then bunker up and make buddies with the comps till you pull ahead in the tech race then then build up an advanced army and crush them or win via space race or culture vic. All though I haven't managed to get a culture vic on Immortal setting as of yet. I'm more into the space race win and wiping the map clean of AI scum :D
