The sun was low, and gave the sky a lovely deep pink hue. The cobblestone walkway leading to the Consular Palace, flanked with classical statuary of toga-clad men and women and ancient soldiers, was filled to the brim with people, with the crowd extending well beyond the government complex. Police and military in full dress stood before the Consular Palace, both keeping the peace and creating a show. The red banners and Roman flags that were scattered uniformly through the complex lightly in a warm Mediterranean breeze. The day seemed almost fictional.
It was perfect for Nico Romano's debut, as Consul of the Roman Republic.
He strided from the arched entrance of the Consular Palace along a red carpet, grinning and waving gloved hands as the crowd began to cheer. He wore the Consular uniform, a black, militaryesque uniform with red and gold trim, and on his head a cap with the Roman eagle and fascis to the fore and an embroidered wreath surrounding the cap till it met the emblem. From his shoulders fluttered a great cape, with red exterior and gold interior. His image was captured by cameras and broadcasted on massive HDTVs at the two ends of the palace. The spectacle was one of grandeur.
Few had seen a bigger grin as well.
He stood on the balcony, flanked by teleprompters, cameras, microphones, and the newly-formed Praetorian Guard. He continued to wave as the cheerful din continued, shouting "Grazie!" repeatedly till the crowd faded away. Then he began his speech.
"My fellow Romans, of all races and ethnicities, I come to you as a lucky man. I am very fortunate to be the Consul of the Roman Republic, and I would not trade this office for the high office of any other nation. For many years, the people of Southern Europe have been afflicted with war, starvation, and poor leadership. But in the face of tribulation, we all have stood strong. For this, I couldn't possibly wish to lead any other nation.
"The Roman Republic itself has had a rough start. With the collapse of the European Union, which few in the Republic wished for, people feared the worst. Fortunately, the worst was evaded, but soon decades of corruption and incompetency by Leonardo Costa's PRR nearly broke the economy and, what's worse, the will of the nation. I was in the military when Costa was in power, and I became frustrated with the shortsightedness of the PRR. When I became Senator, I vowed to end the corruption of Leonardo Costa's government. I could not do it alone. Without the support of the people, I would not have made it to this office. It was not only a difficult task to do, it was dangerous, as the PRR establishment was willing to do anything to get me out of the way, including assassinate me."
Vicious shouts and boos came from the crowd. Nico Romano waited for the crowd to calm down. "However, I persevered. I knew that only through new and fresh leadership could the Roman Republic, and the Roman People, prosper. With that, I called out the PRR, and my NFP-PRR made sweeping victories, and I was elected Consul by the Senate. With the PRR and the Republic under new leadership, I am sure that we all will prosper.
"As I have promised, much of the economy and governance will be decentralized. Local communities will be given more control over their economies and laws, to make decisions that would benefit them. And I will bring back the proud Roman military tradition, to ensure that our nation is safe in a world full of hostile powers.
"We cannot protect ourselves alone. When I found that the previous government had been engaged in talks with Britain and France, I not only continued but pushed more aggressively for the proposed alliance. Now, the Roman Republic is a leading member of what was the Pact of Europe, now the Neo-European Union. We must defend our allies if they are to defend us, should the day come when we need it.
"The so-called Incan 'Republic' has declared war on our French allies, taking French holdings in South America. It seems that Reza Eghtedar and her PSN wish to create a South American empire, under her tyranical rule. I cannot allow a peaceful people to fall victims to those murderers. A state of war now exists between the Roman Republic and the Incan Republic.
"I understand why some may be skeptical of fighting this war. The land is far away, and isn't really in Roman interests. To this, I say, anything that is in the interest of our allies and in the interest of peace and freedom is in the interest of Rome. If we do not support our allies, how can we expect them to support us in our time of need? As a leading and faithful member of the NEU, we must act against this unwarranted act of agression. I assure you, this war will not disrupt Roman society and our plans to grow the Roman economy, and the war will end quickly, as the silly Rezans soon realize that they do not stand a chance against the coalition set against them.
"In the meantime, I will continue to pursue policies intended at growing the Roman economy, so that all can experience prosperity. I will listen to the pleas of the people I am chosen to lead, and improve life for all Romans, whether they be a Sicilian or a Croat. We will remain a safe and free people, and soon, the Roman Republic will be the envy of the world. This is my promise to you all. Thank you, may God bless you, and have a good night."
The crowd broke into thunderous cheers and applause. Nico Romano waved to the crowd and blew a few kisses, then turned back to the entrance, his cape swishing grandly. The Praetorian Guard followed behind him, holding assault rifles in the palms and leaned against their shoulders. Once inside, the leader of the troop rushed ahead to walk alongside Romano.
"That was a very fine speech, Consul," she said.
"That speech?" Nico Romano laughed. "Carmela, I can assure you that that was the finest bulls**t I ever said."
