Inspirational Patriotic Songs

Anyone else here use to catch the Last Night of the Proms the Brits are generous enough to televise?

Always a nice medley of British patriotic singing in the traditional part of the repertoire. "Jerusalem" being the personal favourite. (Not particularily original of me:))

Sometime I've spent a little time figuring out what the devil the Swedes would be singing, if they tried copying the format. Some of the following would certainly go in:

"Sverige" ("Sweden"):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YGrIvYAsOA
Music by Vilhelm Stenhammar, words by Werner von Heidenstam, Nobel Prize laureate for literature in 1916.
"Now the water of the wells are playing, where once armies stood lit by fire,/and deeds turned into Sagas; but hand by hand, your people, as of old, still take the ancient oaths of allegiance..."
It's the runner up for the competition as national anthem. Bloody brilliant song, but probably wisely came second as it's damn near unsingable for a crowd of ordinary humans bawling with more feeling than skill. Oh, and all the pretty pictures of flowers and landscapes in the clip; very Swedish.

"Land du välsignade" ("Thou Blessed Land")
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gw7bWah8Rsg
1923, music by Ragnar Althén, words by Elisabet Björklund.
"Thou blessed land, take my work!/To you I bequeath all my striving!/Hallow my thought and strengthen my arm,/ to make me stand among the foremost/so that when time on this earth is completed,/and I have descended into the shadows/it will be remembered, with pride, that I was Swedish"... etc.

And thinking about Swedish patriotic songs, they all kind of have this quality of wistful longing. They're not really martial, or at least the marches of this that and the other thing don't resonate with popular sentiments as much.

Finding the martial nuggets there are though, one also finds that strictly speaking they tend to involve people other than Swedes, the Finns, as a testament to how the Finns from the POV of Swedish martial history function quite a bit like the Irish, Welsh and Scots do in British military history; bunch of crazy bastards possible to unleash on an unsuspecting enemy, "and all their wars are merry, and all their songs are sad".

"Finska rytteriets marsch" ("March of the Finnish Cavalry")
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nlXgeiZ1UU&feature=relatedMusic by can't be dated and composer not identified since it's traditional from the 30 Years War, words by Zachris Topelius in 1872. "The snowy North is our fatherland..." As one can surmise from the title, this is one of instances when Sweden's martial history is so intertwined with Finland's separation is pretty damn impossible. These days it's the regimental march of simulatneously the Norbotten Regiment (Sweden) and the Tavastland Regiment (Finland). Iirc it's been picked up one or more German regiments as well.

"Björneborgarnas marsch" ("March of the Björneborg Regiment")
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bw4xuoP8eZ4
Unknown 18th composer, words by 19th c. poet Johan Ludwig Runeberg:
"A storm is loose! The fire's free, as the thunder of the fieldguns roll ahead: Forwards, forwards, rank by rank!" etc.
Very traditional, these days the signature song of the President of Finland, played on the occasion of his presence.

Konstantin Wecker: Vaterland

Vata
is des wirklich wahr
warst du wirklich a Sozi in die
dreißiger Jahr ?
Warst du wirklich damals im Widerstand
hast gekämpft gegns eigene Vaterland ?
Vata
i muass mi schama
i möcht an andern Nama
in der Schul'
du glaubst ned
wie peinlich des is
da heissen's di an Kommunist.

Und der Bua träumt von
Recht und Ordnung
von an gsunden
graden Tritt

gegen all den Schutt
und dann machas dafür dein Sohn kaputt.
Und der Vata nimmt si a Nacht lang Zeit
und verzählt dem Buam von
der Unmenschlichkeit
von Kriag
von KZ
von Feigheit der Leit
und er plärrt
paß auf
die macha si bald wieder breit !
Dann packt der Bua seine Sachen
sagt: Vata
da muass i doch lachen
du kannst es doch überall lesen
des is doch ganz anders geweswn.

gegen all den Schutt
und dann machas dafür dein Sohn kaputt.
Und a paar Wocha später
steht der Bua vor der
Tür
und zittert und flüster:
i ko nix dafür
die macha Ernst
die basteln Granaten
die redn von Volkssturm und Attentaten.
Vata
i muass mi schama
i möcht an andern Nama
wir ham - i trau mirs gor ned sagn

was is bloß wieder aus
Deutschland worn ?
Mit Kommunistenhatz und Berufsverbot
mit Wirtschaftswunder und Arbeitsnot.
Da wehrst di dei Lebn lang
gegen all den Schutt
da machas dafür deine Kinder kaputt.

Rule, Britannia

When Britain first, at heaven's command,
Aro-o-o-ose from out the a-a-a-zure main,
Arose, arose, arose from out the a-azure main,
This was the charter, the charter of the land,
And guardian A-a-angels sang this strain:

Rule Britannia!
Britannia rule the waves
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.
Rule Britannia!
Britannia rule the waves.
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.

The nations, no-o-o-o-ot so blest as thee,
Must i-i-i-i-in their turn, to ty-y--yrants fall,
Must in, must in, must in their turn, to ty-y-rants fall,
While thou shalt flourish, shalt flourish great and free,
The dread and e-e-e-e-nvy of them all.

Rule Britannia!
Britannia rule the waves.
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.
Rule Britannia!
Britannia rule the waves.
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.

And did those feet in ancient time

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?
And did the Countenance Divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among those dark Satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold:
Bring me my arrows of desire:
Bring me my spear: O clouds, unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire!
I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.

I think Never Gonna Give You Up, the anthem of Webland.

Seriously, how has no-one yet mentioned the Soviet national anthem?! Now that is an inspiring anthem, puts 'god save the queen' to shame.

PS. Enclave radio is awful. Get the frequency of the old woman who plays violin, that's much better capital wasteland music. Even Three Dog's station plays better music that Enclave if you can put up with his repetitive sayings and annoying voice.

I sing this to my English wife all the time

I was born on a Dublin street where the Royal drums do beat
And the loving English feet they tramped all over us,
And each and every night when me father'd come home tight
He'd invite the neighbors outside with this chorus:

Oh, come out you black and tans,
Come out and fight me like a man
Show your wives how you won medals down in Flanders
Tell them how the IRA made you run like hell away,
From the green and lovely lanes in Killashandra.
Come let me hear you tell
How you slammed the great Pernell,
When you fought them well and truly persecuted,
Where are the smears and jeers
That you bravely let us hear
When our heroes of sixteen were executed.

Come tell us how you slew
Those brave Arabs two by two
Like the Zulus they had spears and bows and arrows,
How you bravely slew each one
With your sixteen pounder gun
And you frightened them poor natives to their marrow.

The day is coming fast
And the time is here at last,
When each yeoman will be cast aside before us,
And if there be a need
Sure my kids wil sing, "Godspeed!"
With a verse or two of Steven Beehan's chorus.

Carnaval em Veneza (Carnaval in Venice) was the song that brazilian pilots fighting in Italy during WW2 came up with, and it has become the official hymn of the brazilian air force. It's probably the weirdest official hymn in existence.

Carnaval em Veneza said:
Passei o Carnaval em Veneza
Levando umas "bombinhas" daqui
Caprichei bem o meu mergulho
Foi do barulho, o alvo eu atingi

BINGO!!!!

A Turma de lá atirava
Atirava sem cessar
E o pobre "Jambock" pulava
Pulava e gritava sem desanimar
Assim:
FLAK, Flak, este é de quarenta
Flak, Flak, tem ponto cinquenta

Um "Bug" aqui um "Bug" lá
Um "Bug" aqui um "Bug lá
Senta a Púa minha gente
Que ainda temos que Estreifar

You don't mean this Carnival of Venice do you? If so, then the Brazilian Air Force is my new favorite branch of any military, probably ever.

The name was probably inspired by that song, but most importantly because they thought of the lyrics while celebrating in a bar in Pisa a succesful bombing mission in Venice in the carnival of 1945. The song is a joke about partying during carnival in Venice with "firecrackers from home". That's why I find it so amusing that it is an official anthem of a branch of the armed forces.
