Installing under Windows 7

I'm going to get a laptop with Windows 7 Premium. From what I've been hearing, it's going to be impossible to play without upgrading to Professional and getting compatability mode...but I *have* played Civ with Windows 7 Starter, right out of Steam, though it's been a while since that's worked. So what should I expect...?

Sorry about the confusion. You don't need Pro or Ultimate. For the CD-based version, I am just installing in a different folder as seen in the video in my sig and can run the game without further adjustments.

I am curious about Steam and Win7 myself.

There may be confusion between "Windows XP Mode" and "Windows XP Compatibility Mode". The former is the one that needs pro or enterprise and a virtual XP install. The latter is just a compatibility mode setting that works in any Vista or Win7.

i have the problem that after installing my whole CivilizationIII.exe is missing! i dont exactly know what to do, any help?

thx, CivRatte :)

Aw shoot! So there's nothing I can do to make it work on my netbook without an external monitor or GiMeSpace desktop extender, right?

I am so sad right now...
hmm just go to properties and say "run with 800x600" mybe it works! (just an idea)

Not enough info. How do you know it's missing? My only guess is maybe there is an old desktop shortcut pointing to the wrong place? Try launching the game from the start menu folders.

My hard drive died a while back and my attempts to reinstall have not gone well.

My first attempt: I installed my silver interface and other graphics bits + CAII- the game had played pre -silver but refused to play after. More importantly, the game did not even register so that I could uninstall it from my computer. I did a manual delete of all files and folders.

so I just did a new install. The game could sense that old install that was lost in cyberspace but it did install when I inserted an A\ into the path. The problem is that now my comp will not recognize my biq files.

Does anyone know how to get win 7 to read a biq file? it is currently shown with a blank page icon. Civ edit also does not work for anything but making maps :gripe:

I had this working on my old drive but this one just won't work and play well with others.

Edit: I forgot to do the compatibility set. it's fixed now. Thanks

CCM also has an error so I can't play it either <<sigh>>

@ Puppeteer:

Thanks a lot.. I am having all sorts of problems.. one after the other. I'm not very computer wise and get completely lost in the Computer talk, but I can follow a visual tutorial.

I just have a downloaded version of CIV 3 and then I bought the Conquests CD. Should I buy a CIV 3 CD ????

Win7 doesn't get along with programs like Civ III that store settings and data under Program Files, so install Civ III in a different folder. I chose c:\Users\Public\Games\CivIII. Then both CivIII and Win7 are happy.

I watched the video..even for a dead loss at computers like me, I think i can do that.

Q:?- Do i have to un-install everything then start again or can I change folder name while currently having it already installed under - "Files
(x86)Infogrames interactive\CivilizationIII\ 'etc'....

,,,which i found in "locate folder".

I would like to know the answer to cujo's question. The graphics are just incredibly slow on this comp. On my old XP with almost no memory they are fine and this new comp, while not a gamer's deluxe, does have decent stats and should play this without effort.

I'm not sure. My guess is that you'll be able to install the downloaded CivIII, install Conquests and be able to run Conquests and PTW with the CD, but I am not sure if you'll be able to run vanilla civ3 after installing the Conquests CD.

I'm pretty sure you'll need to uninstall then reinstall. Trying to move the folder would probably require changing some registry entries and possibly .ini settings and also moving files from VirtualStore. Easier just to uninstall/reinstall.

Sure, I play with integrated graphics. CivIII is an old 2-D game. Win7 hardware shouldn't have a problem with running it. Although some people replied to my video that they have video issues. I can't duplicate their problem; I'm running Intel x4500 integrated graphics. The only "graphics gotcha" I know of is that netbooks often have 1024x600 screens which isn't tall enough for CivIII to run, and I haven't found a way around this (besides hooking an external monitor and running at 1024x768 or bigger).

Another issue is not having the right dotnet version for CivAssist II, but if you have the right dotnetfx file around you can install it on Win7, too. And I haven't been on the forums in a while...maybe Ainwood released a new version? (MapStat works fine, though.)

Hello all! Question: How do you clear saved games from civ3?

which version do you have?

If you have complete you need to go to the Conquests folder in your Firaxis/Civ 3 file and then look in Saves.

If Win7 is hiding your stuff you may have to go back and read through this thread to find that answer.

I had no problem getting Civ III running after changing the Lsans file but where do I find the .Ini file?

One problem I'm having with My Lenovo I7 is that the game crashes at the finish... the one celebrating the victory and I get a white screen and the game has stopped working notification.

Your .ini file is just called conquests. If you go to your explorer and view it as details, as opposed to icons or thumbnails, you will be able to identify it quickly by type of file. It will be the only "configuration settings" file.

The crash sounds like your folders (or maybe just your Hall of Fame file) have the "read only" attribute. Or it could be a "permissions" issue, in which case you'd have to handle it as an Administrator through the secutrity and sharing tabs (or right-click menu options).

I have a problem accessing this site from another computer because I didn't remember the password and email account change I made..
The problem with so many hints is that looking up the files requires one to look at compatibility folders...
Extensions are not added for computer-challenged users..
I was able to use the screen res for the main game but certain links like F4 reverts to the side bars.

Could someone direct me to the installation and downloads required for installing CivAssist II

Your resolution problem may be because your current resolution is probably 1366, and the highest the game goes is 1280. If I remember correctly.

Not sure I can help you with the rest.

Thanks so far.. The resolution is the same as the game sets up.

Civ Assist won't run???

Someone else might have a solution eventually
For now I have to go to a different computer to finish a game prior to the ending crash..

I have it that the game will run under windows 7 but the screen wont go full size on my computer screen, is that something I cant fix?

I was able to add the screen res command so that the game now plays full screen but the ending sequence all reverts to black side bars (not full screen) and freezes up as it enters the year after the finish which is required for submitting my games.

I also can't get Civassist 2 to run...

Did you ever check your CampaignRecord file, Ozymandius? Is it "read only"?
