Now this is the kind of Military Advisor that I like having . . . one that thinks we can afford a larger military when we're already paying 120 gpt in support!
But how much surplus gold are you making? The stuff that goes to your treasury!
Thats what he bases his advice upon, and its a good thing!
Because that is also how I calculate the unit support of a republic in comparison to a monarchy.
In monarchy: support of a single city empire with size 12 city is 4.
In republic: its 9! (3 from the city center and 6 from the 13 bonus commerce)
In other words, if you are making 2gpt, it could be used to support one more unit in republic!

MAS, I don't think I understand what you're saying here. Using your OCC above, with a size 12 city, in Monarchy, support = 4. In Republic, it's 3. But I'm counting free units, not gold. Are you counting free units + bonus gold (Republic commerce bonus and gold that you'll get assuming roads everywhere, but not terrain-related)?
@Aabraxan: your military advisor will tell you that you can afford more units if you have a positive gpt, no matter what the free units situation.
I am currently paying 444 gpt in unit support in my Deity milk run game (currently shelved due to my impending house move) but my military advisor still tells me we can afford more units when I have my sliders set for some tax going into my treasury.

^ You're laughing at the poor barbs, but remember they can use those railroads in nobody's territory. 
It wouldn't be nice to have an undefended city and have them steal 1/10 of your gold (more than 400) or destroy your work on a spaceship part...
Luckily you have them blocked by units and cities of yours.

happens, and it destroys one of your Mech Infantry... haha@ Mirc & TB -- Yes, I laugh now, but I promise you I wasn't laughing during one of my recent games! I probably shouldn't admit this, but I recently lost about a dozen slaves to barbs . . . . with Modern Armor fortified right next door!

I love the way that barbs can spawn at any time.
Ooooooh, those barbs are sooooo scary!
I thought that barbs could only spawn when they are in darkness and they aren't really in darkness.

Of course it can. It's just less than the number of decimal points being shown will allow (so presumably it's less than 0.1% to happen, but that's still one time in 1000)
