I'll take a wild guess that maybe it's considered in the fog of war even though you can still see the units there, but because there's no improvements to the tile it's not letting you bomb it (a glitch, maybe)?

You can still bomb into the dark as long as the tile is improved, so a stack of enemy units standing on an improved tile are bombable even though you can't see them. If they're on, say an unimproved mountain and in the dark - they're untouchable until you get a visual.

Recon mission?

The Persian guy resisted? Perhaps They joined a worker to the city or something and killed the Roman dude- why else would they actually be mad at you for recapturing your own capital city?

Apologies for prolonging the discussion without giving more pics, but I just want to mention that when the population of Rome grew back to two, I had pop-rush unhappiness, which means the Spear I had to kill must've been pop-rushed; since I never saw the pop reach two, this means the AI must be able to grow-and-rush at the same time. Possibly they rushed with my Roman citizen, leaving a Persian? Or is pop-rushing like building workers--last in, first out?

Those guys that I can't bomb are one diagonal square away from my ironclads; shouldn't that make them visible?

This photo was taken while my bomber was on a bombing run to hit Berlin but I am not sure why the bomber is not in the pic... unless my timing was just off a bit or bombers don't record as they are moving images.

@Bartelby: Pop rushing gets rid of foreign nationals first, your citizens last. So yeah, the Persians killed your citizen. :(

@darski: Say whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa????

Ummm, actually, Darski, those guys you can't bomb are two tiles away from your ironclads. :p

What the others said is correct - you cannot bomb units in the fog of war unless they're sitting on top of a tile improvement. You might know the units are there from the bombing mission, but once the bomber is gone, they'll be back in the fog of war, and you can't bomb them. Use a fighter to run a recon mission, and you'll be able to bomb them.

They are on the 2nd tile away which to me means that there is only one tile (diagonal tile granted) between my 'clads and those guys. I thought a 'clad could see 2 tiles away. It might mean that it is my cruiser that was letting me see the marine which I was able to bomb and bombard with arty.

I learn more about the mechanics of this game every time I play it seems

Line of sight can be somewhat tricky to figure out sometimes. There's a whole bunch of rules (which I'll be happy to explain, if you like), but the one's you're concerned with here are:

Units can see two tiles over water.

and

Units with radar can see two tiles in ANY type of terrain.

Now, on the open sea, your ironclad would certainly be able to see a unit two tiles away. However, it can only see one tile over land.

Also, the IC doesn't have radar. The cruiser does, iirc, so if you put the cruiser where the IC is, it should be able to see the units you want to bomb.

Edit: Just thought of something. You play Vanilla, right Darski? I'm willing to bet you do, because I don't see any craters around Berlin, either. There aren't any cruisers in vanilla. That's a destroyer. They don't have radar either. :p

Yes, they were. Their stats were changed considerably in Conquests though, and they were moved to their own tech, as opposed to being gotten from steam power. :)

Which is why many players don't ever build them, it requires researching yet another optional tech. I might research it for trade bait or if I need extra defense for my galleons, but often I don't even trade for it.

@psweetman: According to her profile, she does play vanilla.

@Overseer: Research? You can always get the tech from trade when you have an expensive tech to trade for an AI's tech that you want, and just get it as part of the deal. ;)

The AI's I see rarely seem to research it, they go for the upper left part of the tech tree mostly(nationalism, communism, fascism, espionage). Meanwhile, I go for the ToE path if I can, then go up the upper middle. Ironclads are so damn slow that I hardly use them, I'd rather have more frigates.

Just get combustion, ironclads aren't worth it unless you can trade for the tech.

I am sure this is a common sight, but here it is anyway.

1) England has a spear combo wanting to settle an grab the Iron. They probably already have Iron. This combo came right in the face of an elite knight and our being at war. They have already lost 4 or 5 combos to one unit or another.

2) You can see a goody hut right next to a town that has been there forever. In fact I can see many huts around.

Trade for England's Territory Map and the hut will vanish.
