Internet addiction gets Finnish conscripts out of army

Funny, I actually know a guy who fits that description. He entered service a month ago and could only take it for two weeks

About the conscripted army though, what other choice do we have? We're a country of five million people with a 1000 kilometer long border with Russia. Them attacking us certainly doesn't seem like a likely scenario but you never know what things are like 20 years from now, better safe than sorry.

Swedes are our buddies though, I can't imagine ever having a war against them. Attacking us would be just plain stupid of them anyway, they'd be learning Finnish in no time

My service starts next January.

I'm not convinced that the optimal solution is sending them back to their computers.

They will be re-conscripted in a few years. They can't be held in the army for more than 12 months and that time should not be wasted getting in shape or losing an internet addiction.

There's nothing special about this really. Same things happens if you break a leg. You're sent home, and called back to serve again in a year or so.

That is a pretty stupid troll. The Finnish military proved rather useful in WWII. And it took your country a ridiculous war to finally get rid of conscription.

And the draft is unenlightened? It's, funnily enough, closely connected with the political consequences of Enlightenment. One man, one vote, one rifle, and all that.

As for "warmongering", well, Finland last initiated war in '41. I can think of quite a few states with a more aggressive track record ...

There is no draft in the U.S... and both males and females can join the military, if they want to.

The mainstream European left has rarely if ever been pacifist. Not that it's at all clear to me why pacifists should prefer a professional army over a drafted one.

(This assuming you by pacifist mean opposed to the use of military violence under any and all circumstances.)

I'm not sure what you mean by "irrelevant historical connection". Conscription is usually defended by reference to the nummerical argument, or by invoking the ideal of a citizen army.

1. Finland isn't in scandinavia
2. Females can join the army any day they want
3. There is a civil service for those that don't want to go army
4. It's very enlightened to keep amount of troops required to defend a long border against a (past) superpower, yet only way to do it with a small population is draft.
5. And we won't let go of infantry mines. No. don't even think about it.

Conscription is a disaster for human rights, lets not pretend anything else. For 6-12 months of your life you will be without all the rights you take for granted in any liberal democracy.

I dont think any Finn would hold up any illusion of Finland being "enlightened". An American egalitarian liberal or a Swedish socio-chauvinist would perhaps, but they exist in America and Sweden respectivly, not in Finland.

The simple reality is that the Finnish defense has a heavy burden to bear, maintaining a "credible" defense. To achieve that we use conscription and land mines.
