Introducing Easy Upload System II

Special today, just for Perfection (because we like you ;)): 1MB*postcount/10000.

:p

I would have done it like this:
PHP:
If user$ <> "Perfection"
   Then Upload_Limit = 1*2^20*(PostCount/100)
   Else Upload_Limit = 1*2^10*(PostCount/10000)
EndIF

That would be how to *implement* it. ;)

I was going for the "friendly car salesman" approach: "Tell you what I'm going to do; because I like you...."

:D

You're presuming I want to be nice about it.

You do that and I'll show you what high volume posting really is!

I have a massive postcount without trying that hard, do really you wanna see what I could do if I made a concerted effort?

You'd do absolutely nothing because my posts would all be completely within forum regulations.

They wouldn't be that good, consisting mostly of my terrible civ advice and arguments about things I know nothing about. But they'd be the same bland boring stuff that half the other forumers post.

You're threatening us moderators with a situation we want? :D

Ah, but you wouldn't want the situation because the posts would be absolutely terrible. I'd give poor advice and make incoherant arguements.

You can't ban me for that!

Incoherant arguments contribute nothing to the boards except serve as pointless posts and would be dealt with as pure spam. Hardly within the forum regulations.

Nah, that's not what I see in OT. People create crappy poorly-worded incosistant and incomprehensible arguements all the time. Heck, I've done it on multiple occasions where I misread the initial post or have gross errors in what I view is factual.

Suffice it to say, terrible arguements that lack consistancy have been completetly tolerated by the moderating community.

I would like to follow up on Sullla's post on page 2 of this thread. SGs will be ruined by this change unless an exception is made. The majority of my Civ3 experience was in the SG forum, and I know a ton of players learned how to play the game by following the top-level players in there. To think that LotR10 - Scouting Sid (see the last link in my signature) never would have taken place if the "Easy Upload System II" was in place then. I shudder to think of it. Thunderfall?

As there are numerous image hosting sites (imageshack, photobucket, flicker), there are also plenty of file hosting sites as well. A google search would lead you to them.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding, but what's wrong with what he's saying?

Am I the only to notice this is actually beneficial for Perfection?

The new upload system is not friendly to SGs. It is possible for some people to at least temporarily work around the new system, but the fact remains that the old system allowed an unlimited amount of space for SG players. The new system, both using local disk space and external disk space (imageshack, etc), will eventually run into space limits.

Sirian himself has posted he will play no more SGs because of the new system: Siran's post in Miller Time SG (I strongly urge you to read his words on the subject). No more games like Cuban Isolationists. That thread is still getting new posts today.

I think something should be done to encourage SGs to continue to provide a wealth of pictures. An ideal solution, to my mind, would be a way to add pictures directly to a post, say 15-20 per post, and not use your own personal disk space. Adding a button in the compose message editor which would both upload a image and put the link in the text would be perfect. Have this space be similar to attached files and not count toward the posters 30 meg limit.

In addition, the filesize of a Civ4SaveGame file should be increased from 500k to at least twice, probably 3 times, to 1.5 meg, to account for large maps in the late game. Having to use personal space because the limit is too low does not make sense.

Well, as Thunderfall has already said, images should be uploaded to a picture server, such as Imageshack or Photobucket.

There are also sites out there that will allow you to upload any kind of file. As I said earlier, a simple google search will lead you to them. Really, there is no difference in using one of these servers and the old easy upload system. Aside from having to link to a different server.

I suppose it's not occured to anyone that TF may be trying to save storage space? Or at least use it in a different manner?

you know, if ever there was a time to implement a donation system for CFC, this would be it. I'm sure many SG'ers would gladly pay $5-10 dollars to have thier upload limit removed.

When SG players have nearly used up all their space, they can contact me and I will consider adding them to the easy upload's exclusion list, which doesn't have space limit. Same thing applies for modders. Just make sure you show some effort to to delete obsolete files (ex. mainly old saved games) you don't need.

Of course, if you are not against using image hosting service like ImageShack and PhotoBucket, you are welcomed to use those. If used properly, like using direct image links instead of having people visit ImageShack's site (which has popup ads) to see the full image , those services are worth using.
