Now for some roleplaying!
After the recent elections, the party membership of the national council is as follows:
Moderate Party: 39%
Centrist Party: 32%
Libertarian Party: 15%
Nationalist Party: 9%
Social Party: 4%
Minority Party Coalition: 1%
The
Moderate and
Centrist parties have very similar ideologies, and appear identical to most outsiders. The views of the Centrist party tend to fluctuate with the median opinion of the population, while the views of the Moderate party tend to stay constant. However, the differences between the two are minor, and in practice, they tend to compromise on almost every issue. Both parties are very pragmatic, and will do whatever seems reasonable.
The
Libertarian party is the party of less government. On Foreign Policy, they tend to support
isolationism non-interventionism (Thanks ilduce349), as that requires less of a standing army. Domestically, they support whatever will reduce government bureaucracy, and they believe strongly in the free market.
The
Nationalist party actually used to be in the minority party coalition only a few election cycles ago. After Pwniez became relevant, and Das Boot arrived on the Eastern Seaboard, a surge of Nationalism arrived in Columbus, as the citizens realized that the world was not as empty as they wished it was. Now that treaties have been issued with both sides, the tide of Nationalism is beginning to fade, but this party will probably permanently be on the Council. The party leader,
Hugh Kreisel, gives fiery speeches with strong rhetoric, which is usually out of place on the Council. However, the Moderates and Centrists keep him around because they know he is a strong leader, which Columbus will need if it's ever involved in a war. The Nationalists support aggressive foreign policy, and generally align on domestic policy with whoever they think would increase GDP the most.
The
Social party supports what Americans used to call "Socialism," namely government control of some industries, more benefits to the working class, etc. On foreign policy, they tend to align with the Centrists.
An interesting aspect of Columbus national politics is the
Minority Party Coalition. Small political parties, who couldn't get into to parliament on their own, join the MPC. In the MPC, each member party gets to use the Coalition's one seat for a few months, then it revolves to the next party. In this manner, every party's voice is heard, and even diametrically opposed groups can both be on the coalition.
