Is it important to play the official version patch?

I've been wondering why so many continue to play the 1.17 version in light of the tech trading / value issue. I personally stayed w/ 1.16 because of the obvious, plus to utilize UUs (become obsolete quickly under 1.17).

Outside of personal tastes, the only other reason I can think of is to play GOTM. A poster on Apolyton suggested that one stays w/ 1.17 because it is official.

Thoughts?

i think it just depends on your personal preference. I've actually stopped playing Civ3 for a couple of weeks and won't play again until the next patch comes out.

I, too, dropped down to 1.16.
As I do not get involved with the GOTM, I do not see 1.17 as the 'official' version. Other than missing the stack movement of troops, 1.16 is where I will stay. Hopefully the next patch will correct all of the negative aspects 1.17.

I play with v1.17. If there is anything in this game I can do, its getting a tech lead (regent diff). I tend to build all the buildings I can so I get a strong economy going, and good tech rate. However, I don't build more than 1 def unit per city, unless it has good wonder or some other reason, then I have about 3 cities with 2 units. I always play archipilago maps, so the AI doesn't find and trade with each other for a while, so I manage to get ahead of them. One time I coulda mowed over a guys pikeman and spearman with my tanks, because he hadn't discovered any other civs yet:lol:

I am continuing to play 1.17 and have been having no problems with it. The AI tech whoring is not much of a problem for me, as in my past few games by the mid point there was still a substantial tech gradient amongst the AI civs. In fact in my past game I rolled over one AI who was still in the middle ages with my mech infantry while the other two AI players were in the late industrial. This may be a result of my like for playing on smaller maps (so that they go faster).

It all comes down to playing style and how you weight the positive and negative changes in the latest patch.

How do you prevent rival civs from bullying you with what I'm assuming is a small military?

I don't understand why ppl keep whining about ai traiding techs. What is reason to play in civ3 with ai who has 10 archers against your 10 tanks which was happening often even on reagent lvl?

I like to spend lots of time in the ancient and medieval ages, when I find the game the most fun. The increased tech trading significally decreases the time spent in at least the ancient ages. This is my main reson for avoiding 1.17. IMHO you should use whatever patch that gives you the best gaming experience and IMHO 1.16 is more fun to play. So I stay with it. Of course, if I wanted to play GOTM I would have to upgrade. Luckily for me I tend to avoid such events, since they are to much of a contest for my taste. I play the game because I enjoy it, not because I want to compete with others.

I agree. Also, I enjoy the UUs, and under 1.17, early UUs are quickly obsolete for many purposes.

As general rules of thumb, you can survive being bullyed so long as you don't go to war. Submitting to requests for gold and a map usually raises the AI back to polite. The AI rarely makes really outrageous demands, and besides, giving in is the only way to see some of the funny retorts they'll make while playing the game. :D
