Not saying Knopfler is a jerk, but i think it was meant as a joke, and manual labour people usually express themselves more colourfully.

Maybe not the guy in the video, but Knopfler identified with the millionaire in the song. So, not so much a joke as self deprication.

The vast majority of the music industry are not millionaires though. If you can break into the middle class as a musician you are exceptional.
