Is there really racism in America?

Yes, you said that already...I'm interested in how you know this, or think you know this.

Does it matter how I know it? I do. You admitted yourself you have these in the USA.

Racism is latent and present in all societies.

If you think your nation is not host to any forms of racism, that thinking itself is a form of elitism.

Most people are racist, it is just they pretend not to be in polite company.

While humans think they way they do today, there will always be unworthy emotional movements.

I know I did, I said it is everywhere in every country. Your making it out like it's worse here than in other places, but I'm telling you it's just as bad, even in Europe.

The thread is entitled 'Is there really racism in America?'.

Whether or not there is racism in Europe is irrelevant.

Good point, but you waited quite a long time into the discussion before seeming to care about thread titles. But you just gave me an idea  ....

Hasn't California a problem with a wide spread grudge versus Hispanics ?
only the arrogent non-Californians in the eastern USA who try to control California have a grudge against Mexicans(and other Latinos). A lot of people in Califonia have Mexican descendants and most others aren't rasist.

For me, a country which had race-segregation until the 60ies and some states, which had until 2000 constitution-articles which forbid interracial-marriage has racism deeply embedded in it's culture and in my view, a lot Americans live up to that prejudice
racial segregation was illegal since 1953, but a lot of the states in the former Confederacy didn't recognize these laws(my grandmother and grandfather, who both lived in Texas, didn't like segregation, but my grandmother went to a segregated school and my grandfather moved into New Mexico[which, despite it's name, is part of the USA]).

the people who are rasist are generally the ones who hate their country and go around waving a Confederate flag. please don't judge all Americans or our nation on these few ignorant people.

% of the population by race in the USA:

white: 75%
blacks 12.1%
asians(i believe this includes the middle east): 3.6%
american indians: 0.9%

% of the population by race in California:
white: 59%
black 6.7%
asian 10.9%
american indian 1.0%

of hispanic origin
USA:
hispanic origin: 12.5%
non-hispanic origin: 87.5%

california:
hispanic origin: 32.4%
non-hispanic origin: 67.6%

for some reason, Hispanics are not included in part of the counting, so it won't add up to 100%. in California, more Mexicans come across the border every year than people born in the state.

How much of a problem is this considered by the state?

it isn't much of a problem in California politics, but some of the Feds want to close our borders. they say that terrorists can come over. terrorists can also come over in planes. a lot of rasist people in the eastern USA hate California just because we are more multi-racial and more liberal than them.

But more coming over the border than being born? That must be a hell of a lot...

Any more important details?

Not "Eastern", but Southeastern. New England and New York et al are far from racist.

I'm all for protection and safety, but closing the borders is just stupid. I know you don't advocate this, sims, I'm just spouting off my opinion here.

One of the great things about this country is the open arms we've had for people of other nations. We would still be a small backwater country if it hadn't been for people coming here and wanting a better life.

Kind of a wierd point of view for me to take, as I'm Indian. However, my tribe has been little affected by the white mans coming. Oh, sure, we've had our problems, but there are still areas of our native lands that are largly us. One thing my father taught me when I was young that if it wasn't for the white man coming over here, we (indians) woudn't have the standard of living we have now. Better medical care, better housing, better food. But what a price it was to pay. . .

It's funny, tho, racism. Especially when you get the 'reverse' racism. Now, mind you, racism is rcism in my book. Regardless of what race does it to another. Calling it reverse racism is like saying the sun rises. . . looks that way, but really there's something else going on.

I married a white woman. She doesn't like going on outings with me to the local indian college because of the looks and glares she gets because she married an Indian. Sometimes, but rarely, outright hostility. It makes her uncomfortable, and yes, it's racism. I don't know if these people think that I'm 'siding with the Man' or what. Consequently we don't do many functions there. So who's loss is it? Mine? My wife's? The other indians there? I think all.

Unrealisitic, I know, but the romantic in me longs for the day when color is no longer an issue.

Being multi- racial has nothing to do with it or even the liberalism. You know it. I know it. So don't say it. I think you would be surprised by the diversity in the East. Actually, individuals themselves are multiple nationalities and even races in the east (even more so in the north).

Inclusive policies may not have a cause & effect relationship with liberalism, but it is strongly correlated. You know it. I know it. So don't dance around it too far.

obviously being multi-racial and liberalism aren't related. i never seaid they were. my point is that there is more diversity in the West than in the East. and people who are of Mexican descent are more likely to vote for the Democrats. that is another reason some of the Feds want our border closed, since California is becoming even more liberal.

by the way, does anybody know who Che Guearra is(i'm sure his name is spelled wrong) since there is a big mural of him in my school.

 Its like a different america in the bay area isnt it?

The DPRSF.... :D

Seriously, our school is maybe 30% Hispanic. It's expected that they'll honor their leaders. Although I find Cesar Chavez more inspiring ;)

Besides, what do you expect, a mural of Alexander Hamilton or something?

you both go to the same school?

creepy...

closest thing I have to that is a guy who lives a couple kilometers from where I live who posts here.

Nope, I'm in the lower bay area [San Jose, Cupertino, etc], not SF proper. The whole of California has a large Hispanic population, obviously. Thus I meant "my school as well", not "OUR school" :D

Really when I come to think of it, Che's pretty controversial. I wonder what kind of school - maybe inner city - would not have "conscientious" parents come and protest outside...
