If your mouth is stuffed with something, and you try to inhale, you could suck whatever is your your mouth into your air pipe. It's possible.

Idunno...it could be, but then again I never trust the News. Or Australians. ;)

 When I first read it I thought it meant the guy wrapped the sausage around her neck and choked her.

Or you could just choke on it conventionally, by swallowing too large a piece. Dunno how you'd prove it wasn't an accident though.

I dunno, could well be true. Certainly a bizarre way to die.

All you have to do is shove the sausage down into the trachea. It only takes 5 minutes or less to die.

I remember back when I was in training, we used to get at least 3 cases a year of someone choking on a piece of steak, from a nearby restaurant. The hospital was in a neighborhood in Manhattan with a reputation for fabulous restaurants, so there were probably plenty of potential incidents waiting to happen. About 2/3 of the time, the patient would either be dead on arrival, or end up brain dead because the food wasn't removed in time.

The worst was when a guy died in a restaurant after having choked on a piece of meat. He had apparently choked, then collapsed onto the table. The restaurant called an ambulance, but while awaiting their arrival did absolutely nothing to help the man. He just lay there, with his head on the table. You would think with all those "Choking Victim" posters, they'd realize what to do and actually perform the Heimlich Maneuver once. Anyway, the man was already dead by the time the ambulance arrived. Sad, really.

Be that as it may, I can say with certainty that none of the cases were intentional, but accidental.

:hammer: news.com.au happens to be my home page ;)

This certainly sounds a bit odd.

If it was accidental, you would think the guy would do something.

what a way to go...

While you cannot only be choked to death by swallowed food, Wurst is long enough to reach a certain area in your throat, where some important nerves are to be found. Once they get some pressure (e.g. by stuffing a sausage into the throat, or swallowing a large chunk of food that gets stuck), you'll die immediately. The reason: the blood circulation will be immediately stopped. It's a true "blitzdeath"...
I heard of some guy who wanted to play his pal a prank by pushing a sausage down his throat...

The macabre moral: Never swallow your food too quickly.
