Perhaps it could be argued that Richard I (the Lionheart) was going on a religious war because he sold so much of his land to finance the crusade and didn't he get all pissy about visiting Jerusalem while it was under Islamic control?

There are several good reasons for the crusades (other than "spreading our faith or other nonsense), like control of the mediterranean trade (that's why they took Constantinople) which was a massive source of wealth, and the wealth of the holy land alone was substantial. Also, there was the fear of Turks and Saracens becoming a threat.
