Edit: I meant to say: Isn't it dumb to show the attack result before the animation

One thing that bugs me about Civ4 is that when your attack a unit or city, it shows the result before the animation takes place. What's the point of watching the animation after you already know what happened? Couldn't the game designers have showed the animation and then the text result? Would that be so hard, or what is the point for the way it is now? On Civ3 battles, I liked the way you could see the health bars changing and thus how the battle was going.

The figure shown is just for guidance only, the final outcome of any fight is by no means guaranteed. Just have a look at a few threads in this forum to see how this can all go pear-shaped sometimes e.g. a heavily promoted tank falling to a lone Longbowman fortified on a hilltop, for instance. The odds for the tank were allegedly a 125% chance of winning this encounter... but it didn't.

Likewise I will sometimes chance it if I'm in a desperate situation. Sometimes it pays off and my weak 'stick man' will see off a more powerful unit, a pleasant surprise when it happens. That's half the fun of the game. :D

Use the prediction as a guide only, or don't look at them beforehand if you would rather not know. ;)

PS. Edited to say: sorry, just re-read your post and realise you are talking about the text result, top right. Yes, I agree with you on that one... I try not to look! LOL.

I think the OP is talking about the health text for the units in combat. If you look, you'll see one drop to 0.0 and the winner health > 0.0 immediatly once you start combat. It's depressing when you see your tank drop to 0.0!!!

Either way, i've turn on quick combat.... no point with the animations after a few games.

Thank god they made this into a 3d game... I found the results being shown before the animation as a bit of a waste...

That said... the animations are REALLY slow... it would be cool for those that like them to perhaps double or triple the speed (via an option)
