What did Carthage do! Wait, or did Sycrause invade someone? Could be too late to clarify, but it's only a defensive alilance :mischief:

Only Srijivijaya and Ur/Medes left.

...

The moment of truth approaches. Will Iggy finally succeed in victory, or will Ur fight its way to a glorious comeback?

Beginning to post update.

I sincerely apologize to Iggy for the content within.

Update 12: The Great War(s)

900-800 BC

Unlike the rest of the world (see pretty much anywhere else in the update), Carthage is at peace. Work begins to glorify the city of Carthage, modernizing the city and making it the great cultural city of the world like it deserves to be. Carthage also focuses on peacefully expanding its lands, at least in the sense that they are slaughtering barbarians rather than other civilized folk. The city of Saldae is founded between Winair and Carthage proper (-400 Spearmen). Due to the high casualties in "purifying" the land to make it fit for settlers, other expansion is halted, and barbarian raids seem to increase (-500 Spearmen)...

Because Carthage does not expand further west, Tartessos does not go to war against them, which is good, since they have purchased iron technology from the Romans. However, Syracuse, which has also purchased iron from the Romans, does expand west (-300 Spearmen). Tartessos then promptly attacks them, and overruns their Iberian colony (Syracuse: -500 Spearmen, -100 Archers, Tartessos: -800 Spearmen, -50 Archers). Tartessos then severs all trade on the northern route, leading to an increase of trade on the southern route (1 trade economy from Syracuse to Carthage). Syracuse then activates their defensive alliance with Rome. Will the Romans aid their allies?

Rome, meanwhile, continues to act as the arms dealer of the Mediterranean. They sell to Syracuse (in exchange for their Mediterranean possessions) and to Tartessos (angering Syracuse), as well as to Byzantium (angering Sparta--see below). They had also planned to sell it to Egypt, but payment never comes (although see below). And these are just the public transactions--who knows where the many other states who gained iron technology this turn got it from? Efforts are also made to grow rural economy, but they have not yet borne fruit, as no more farms can be realistically supported. However, the newly established city of Tarentum booms, adding much money to Rome's coffers (+1 urban economy).

Rome also launches a three-pronged invasion of the territory to their north to prevent barbarian raids, and their iron swords easily cut down the resistance they face (+1 size, -2000 Swordsmen, -1000 Spearmen, -300 Archers).

-------------------------------------------------------

Atyria, after finishing the Metalworks of Blera, also begins sending iron weapons to other countries, though not iron technology. Egypt has already gained iron technology somehow, and due to barbarian activity (see below), only western Medea receives Atyrian iron, but more importantly, the Byzantines receive iron. This allow them to build enough ships to maintain naval superiority long enough to purchase iron from the Romans (though, strangely, this does not seem to have any effect on their treasury). Not wanting to escalate the war further, the Spartans do not hinder this transaction, though they are not pleased with either Atyrian or Rome.

As stated before, Sparta is not happy with the Atyrian and Roman actions, but not upset enough to start a war over it. If the Sea Peoples had done something, the fragile peace might have shattered, but as it is, Sparta signs a 3-turn NAP with them in exchange for their (nearly overrun) colony. They then move ahead with plans for an invasion of Byzantium. Euboea is easily taken, as it seems to have been abandoned by the Byzantines, and the native Greek population welcomes them as liberators (+1 confidence).

The rest is harder. Expecting to face a vastly smaller Byzantine fleet, the Spartans are not prepared for a modern fleet that is as large as theirs. To make matters worse, the Spartans are not able to engage all Byzantine shipping, as all of the Aegean islands are controlled by the League. Byzantine ships are able to quickly island-hop, and League officials will not allow fighting on their islands, although they have had to break up several fistfights between Spartan and Byzantine merchants. In fact, shipping seems to have increased, not decreased, as both League and Atyrian merchant frequent the area. A crucial part of the Spartan plan involves controlling the Bosporus, which they are unable to do, since the Byzantines are better sailors on their home turf in an easily defensible area (Sparta: -20 Galleys, Byzantium: -10 Galleys). The Spartans are not able to get close enough to bombard Byzantium.

Things go slightly better in Thessalonika. The Spartans are able to retake all of the former League colony, and push back the barbarians a little farther, but not much, as they are greatly outnumbered and the Thracians are using stolen iron weapons (-800 Swordsmen, -1000 Spearmen, -100 Archers).

-------------------------------------------------------

Magan blockades Socotra, although this has little effect since the islanders are self-sufficient. The overstretched garrison barely manages to maintain control of the area they already have (-400 UU). Perhaps things would be easier with iron weapons?

-------------------------------------------------------

The Sea Peoples make peace with Sparta, ceding their territory to them (-1 confidence).

It is discovered that the iron deposits north of Tyre are second only to those near Rome, and their mining greatly increases the League's economy (+1 rural economy). In other news, there have been extremely good harvests in Syria this turn (+1 spending point)

The League recruits its first swordsmen, as well as its first horsemen. They then launch a massive campaign in the south (-2000 Swordsmen, -100 Horsemen). The Hyksos are peacefully assimilated, and then are set up to rule over the rest of the local tribes as the local nobility. The League takes control over the rest of the Sinai, much to the dismay of the Egyptians, who view it as their rightful land(-1 Egyptian confidence). In addition, eastward expansion occurs to the Jordan river valley.

Although they did not purchase it from Rome, Egypt must have gotten iron age technology from somewhere, for they recruit a large force of swordsmen. The Egyptians also build the city of Rosetta as a port city for New Memphis, and work begins on a great harbor there, similar to the Harbor of Atyrian, which will hopefully improve both trade and naval training.

For centuries, the Nubians have been a source of annoyance to the Egyptian pharaohs, even surrounding and besieging Thebes during the war with the Sea Peoples. The current Pharaoh decides to defeat them once and for all. However, this is easier said than done. It is not simply a matter of fighting a battle with the opposing army--the Nubians melt into the desert, then suddenly appear, cutting down a few troops and then disappearing again. Through sheer numbers and persistence, the Egyptians manage to push down the Nile as far as the Third Cataract, but have to stop there to reestablish supply lines (+1 confidence, -2000 Swordsmen, -800 Spearmen, -400 Archers).

-------------------------------------------------------

Iberia decides to restart its expansion and recruits an army, though it has to turn away many because it cannot arm them with bronze. A large force is sent to the west (-600 Axemen, -700 UU),and contact is made with a large group of tribes who have fled from the west, who call themselves the Maar of the North (see below). There are also rumors of a settlement to the north.

The rest of the army expands southeast (-400 Axemen, -300 Spearmen, -200 Archers), and makes contact with Syracuse. Perhaps Iberia should build a port?

-------------------------------------------------------

In a massive campaign (-1500 Spearmen, -800 UU, -600 Archers), the newly renamed Prussian Empire crushes the Danish barbarians and pushes them south over the Elbe river. The Prussians manage to gain control of the entire peninsula, as well as the mouth of the Elbe. Increasingly, Prussia is becoming divided into Prussia proper, with Konigsburg as the capital, and "West Prussia", with Copenhagen as the administrative capital.

The NAP with Brittania has now expired, and while some extremists press for the restarting of raids, most expect it to be renewed, especially since Prussia still has an NAP with Eirehann

Noricum, meanwhile, expands south to the Danube and north to extend its border with Prussia.

-------------------------------------------------------

Eirehann continues scouting south past Normandy, looking for a defensible area for a city. They finally find one nestled in the mountains far to the south, and found Port Niall there, beating back the barbarians (-800 Axemen). Thus far, they have not contacted anyone more civilized, though there are whispers of a more civilized federation of tribes across the mountains.

Closer to home, there is celebration throughout Ireland, as the great Temple of Dagda is finished, albeit centuries behind schedule. The Temple regulates the druid orders, and standardizes the worship of Dagda.

But neither of these events get as much attention as the usually would, for Eirehann is going to war.

Brittania had decided, much to the approval of its populace (+1 confidence), that the Maarian raids were unacceptable. So a great army was gathered, Eirean troops were summoned, and soon a massive armada left Plymouth. It crossed the channel, and the entire massive force landed in Normandy--or former Normandy, it was now deserted, the fields having been burned and the entire population having fled inland, stopping in a fertile valley between two rivers.

Undeterred, the allied army executed the next part of its plan. The fleet was divided in three, and three great armies landed at three spots on the Maarian coast--the Brittanians in the north and south, and Eirehann in the center. But they found, or rather did not find, the same thing as in Normandy. The Maarian populace, in a state of panic over the impending invasion, reverted to its nomadic roots. They destroyed the roads, razed the city and ports, and fled inland. Thus were the Maar of the South formed.

The remaining merchants who formed the government knew they had no chance. So they banded together their ships and the troops who were still loyal to them, and fled to the south, beyond any civilization. Finally, they found the perfect site to establish a city--but for the locals. Their small army was routed (-200 Spearmen, -175 Archers), and the Maar of the South are forced to flee and establish their city, New Maar, on the island nearby.

As for Britannia, they have nothing to show for their war except a series of remote, unproductive colonies which are constantly raided (Brittania: -600 Axemen, Eirehann: -200 Axemen), and a massive army which drains a large portion of the treasury.

-------------------------------------------------------

After several centuries of war, there is peace once again in Japan, although the eight states have been reduced to five.

It is an uneasy peace, as the nations eye each other and plot to overthrow the others. And a catalyst may have been found for war.

When Toyama was partitioned by Yamato, Kibi, and Kenu (who, ever-opportunistic, stepped in at the last moment and seized the north), the Toyama accepted without bloodshed on the condition that they be spared. While Yamato accepts the Toyama as full citizens, and Kenu treats them as lower-class serfs, Kibi massacres all of the Toyama in its lands, and resettles former Toyama with its own citizens. The Toyama in Yamato cry out for blood. Will they get it?

-------------------------------------------------------

Srivijaya continues to expand north and west (-300 Spearmen) on its island, and founds the city of Jambi in the north. But it also begins to look to the sea, beyond the horizon, and settles the Riau islands with a minimum of bloodshed (-50 Spearmen, -50 Archers). With considerably more bloodshed (-300 Spearmen, -100 Archers), the tip of the Malay peninsula is settled as well.

Most importantly, an expedition is sent to the north, and encounters the trading state of Funan. Friendly relations are established, and the expedition is enthralled by tales of the rich nations to the west...

-------------------------------------------------------

Finally we come to the Great War, as it is beginning to be called. Both sides are rather more cocky than they believe they should be, since they think they have secured iron while the other side has not. But both Ur and Medea receive iron from someone this turn, although difficulties in transporting iron to the eastern half of Medea, since the barbarians have grown much more hostile, mean the Medes can only produce at around three-quarters efficiency.

Elsewhere, Ur moves its government to Manama, and the dynasties of Ur and Dilmun are linked in a royal marriage. Strangely, the heirs ahead of Sargon seem to die in mysterious accidents, and Sargon soon is king of both Dilmun and Ur, though they are ruled separately.

Naval battles begin right away. Once again, Ur manages to procure more river boats--and since it staffs them with marines, the Medean boats are soon routed (Medes: -45 River Boats, Ur: -30 River Boats, -250 Swordsmen, -50 Axemen, -350 Hittite Spearmen).

Ur's naval superiority delays the battle between the rivers, but only slightly--and although Ur inflicts massive casualties, they are ultimately outnumbered, surrounded, and destroyed (Ur: -850 UU, -1000 Hittite Spearmen, -3 River Boats, Medes: -1200 UU, -1200 Spearmen, -300 Archers, -200 Volunteers).

But once again, Ur has an ace up its sleeve. The fact that they are outnumbered in the west merely means that they are far superior in the east--and indeed, they have nearly twice the troops. The Medan army is encircled, and as they try to flee through their only opening, they are cut down and destroyed (Medea: -2400 UU, -1250 Spearmen, -425 Archers, -200 volunteers, -150 Chariots, Ur: -2000 UU, -1000 Swordsmen, -800 Hittite Spearmen).

And so begins the Desperate March, as it comes to be called. Marching west, Ur's army intercepts the remnants of the Western Army and defeats them (Medes: -300 UU, -50 Spearmen, -125 Archers, -150 Chariots, Ur: -1000 UU, -200 Archers). Gathering the marines assigned to the River Boats, the entire Urrian army rushes north, where it catches the Medan home army from behind as it is fighting off a barbarian invasion (Medes: -1000 Spearmen, -1500 UU, -425 Archers Ur: -1200 UU, -300 Swordsmen, -200 Chariots). Agbatana is left undefended, and the Urrians destroy it with all the rage from all the suffering they have undergone from centuries of war. The populace is slaughtered, and the fields salted. And then they take every other city in Medea proper, slaughtering the inhabitants or enslaving them (-1200 UU, -100 Archers).

The Medean army in the west, of course, has not been idle. Indeed, they are trying desperately to rush home. They manage to force their way across the Euphrates(Ur: -20 River Boats, Medes: -600 UU). But try as they might, they cannot cross the Tigris. Thus ends the century.

The Medes now have their own revenge to exact. (Medes: -1 Size, -2 Rural, -2 Urban economy, -2 Confidence, -1 Culture, Ur: +1 Rural, +1 Urban economy, +1 spending point from sack of Agbatana, +2 confidence).

Rants from the Mod (OOC)

Expansion south into Africa and north into Gaul, Switzerland, and the Balkans is going to be very hard for a while yet--and holding onto it will be even harder. Feel free to try, but this isn't a 1-turn campaign, or even a 3-turn campaign.

I added new Confidence and Culture levels.

Lightened Eirehann's color slightly so it wouldn't conflict with Rome's.

Sorry Iggy. Andis just had amazing tactics and a numerical edge.

Scapegoat-for-the-turn: adherence--orders WAY too long for doing so little.

Best orders: andis, based on how they turned out...

Deadline is Wednesday.

Wow, that took a long time. Stats are up.

*looks at map* *cough* *cough* Where is my expansion north? :p Dumb Egyptians, Tartessians, Byzantines, Atryians, Sycrausians and Spartans :p

EDIT: One would also assume with the conquest of the north more farms would be supported. After all... *points to long time frame of 100 years*

1. You're so demanding. :p I'll fix it.

2. Most of what you conquered is mountainous. Farms aren't the only way to increase rural economy...

Of course! Imagine a nes if the mod was lazy and the players did nothing about it ;)

*thinks about northern Italy* But they have the finest Italian Wine from well Italy! Not that I've personally tasted it but it's so I'm told ;) Vineyards are farms aren't they? :mischief:

I fixed the map. Happy now?

More investment, and backing up your claims, will eventually yield results. Just not this turn.
