I am a big (very big) fan of Jap anime. Some of my favourites are like EVA, Macross, Backstabber Sorcerous Orphen, Kanojyo Kareshi, Trigun, Vision of Escaflowne and also others which I can't recall right away. My sources are usually in Jap with Chinese subs (which I can read, sort of - ok I am very lousy at reading Chinese).

Do you like Jap anime too?

i voted yes, but more accurately, it's "yes. . but. . "

there's alot that i DON'T like.

i hate pretty much any mech-anime. i hate any of that silly light hearted trying to be funny anime.

i DO like the really dark, twisted anime.

i liked evangelion (that's not EXACTLY mech-anime :)) and i like what i've seen of vampire princes miyu so far. . .

i didn't like cowboy bebop at all, or any of the other random anime's with huge robots that i've seen parts of so far. . .

I like the Vampire Princess Miyu series too. The endings are always so unexpected.
Anyway, Jap anime is very wide-ranging. I love any anime so long as they have a good plot, reasonable animation and good Jap dubbing. Yes in Jap, they sound a lot better (most of the time anyway).
Dark twisted anime? Then you shld try Ryvius and Devilman Lady (I think the titles sound like these). Ryvius is about a school of space cadets who got marooned on their space station cum school after a terrorist attk. The dark part is when they start dominating/plotting against each other (to the point of killing) to survive whilst trying to survive attks by the military (some kinda conspiracy). Can observe what humans are capable of in the most horrible circumstances.
Devilman Lady is typical dark fantasy fare. About a woman who can turn into a devil, who then is recruited to fight other demons.

For the guy who has voted "I don't know what the heck Jap anime is", anime is animation shows/movies/TV series created in Japan. You know, cartoons but a lot have adult themes and storylines. Some are very adult (you know, hentai). Anime is big in Japan (and some parts of the world). If you haven't heard about them, then well, now you have. :)

I like the Anime Movies.
But most of the series are plain bad IMO. Devil hunter Yoko (or however that ***** was named), Sailer Moon etc.
The only cool one was.. hmm.. dunno the english name. in germany it was "Königin der Tausend Jahre" in English that would be "Queen of the Thousand Years". That one was kinda cool :)

I agree with DaEezT. I only really watch the films (Ghost in the shell is my fave, Shadow Skill is crap and Legend of the overfiend just wasn't the sort of thing I like in anime) but one series I do like is 'Tenchi Muyo!' Its a shame how Cartoon Network made a ****ing mess of it though.

Devil Hunter Yohko? Sailor Moon? Tenchi Muyo? Ghost in the Shell? I feel sorry for you guys; no wonder you don't like anime series. These are like ancient stuff. Though I like the Tenchi Muyo in Love! movie. ;)
You shld try those newer ones like those fr the mid-90s onward. I thought EVA is pretty nice. Also Backstabber Sorcerous Orphen (1st season series only - the 2nd is BAD), Inuyasha, Cardcaptor Sakura (shoujo but extremely funny and cute). And those I name in the beginning thread. These have my personal stamp of approval (for all the good it'll do).

But the problem is the good anime movies are hard to come by here in germany. German translations are plain **** and rare. original with german subtitle is more common but even worse :o
The only versions I like are english synchonised ones but getting those in germany
Getting the current hit movies in english original is hard enough, getting english anime movies is nearly impossible and even if you can get your hands on some you'll have to pay much more than a "normal" movie :(

I see. Well, I live here in the Far East and usually once a series is ended in Japan, some smartaleck co in Taiwan or HK will put the whole thing on VCDs, add in the Chinese subs and put them on the mkt. So I usually got 'fresh' supplies. And cheaply too. Sometimes they even show them on the local TV channels (more often on cable - a HK station).
I sympathize with your position but seriously over the last few yrs, the general quality of anime series has gotten a whole lot better. And I'm talking about series (episode 1, 2, 3 and so on). Hadn't seen much of movies lately cos too many to choose fr and buy. :crazyeyes

well, evangelion was good, i watch a bit of Gundam...
i don't suppose dragon ball z counts?? well i like it anyways, but there is way way way too much bull**** in that show, it takes them 10 minutes to power up, or take a **** in the toilet, i can't tell which.

SKM, I just love anime! I'll watch just about anything. I really like the Mecha-Based anime though, my favorites being anything remotely based on Gundam (Gundam Zeta, Double Zeta, G Gundam, Gundam Wing, Gundam Wing-Endless Waltz, Gundam-War in the Pocket, oh God I could go on for hours....:)). But I also liked Blue Sub. 6 (Now there is twisted. Not dark, just twisted.), Outlawstar, Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, and um...um......Damn, I know I've watched more than that.....Ah well, I'll tell you more when I remember all the anime I've watched.

Xeven :king:

P.S. I have watched like 2 episodes of Escanflowne, Pokemon, and V Gundam (A.K.A 'Turn-A-Gundam') THEY SUCKED, so I never watched more than two (The first one I watch is to get aquainted with the show, the second to see if the last one was just a bad episode or that series ****in' sucks.)

But Pokemon........ You tried watching that? Then maybe it's my age.......

I don't know why you dislike Escaflowne. I sort of like it very much myself. Maybe it helps if you watch the whole thing thru. As I remember it, the mechas only start appearing fr episode 2 and the last episode is kinda boring.

But Pokemon????

"I saw some pretty funny anime porn once..."

You know those Japanese ..... sick minds.

Some of my favorites not yet mentioned..

Akira - probably the work the broke Anime into the US market

Night of the Fireflies (or something like that) -- - very different for an Anime, story of some kids trying to survive in Hiroshima right after the a-bomb fell.

Vampire Hunter "D" - dark and silly at the same time

Ninja Scroll - (the sequel, I can't remember the name - was really bad though)

Heroic Legend of Arislan series

I've seen a bunch of other series on video. and must agree with the other posters. Some are good, some are *really* bad

It's just like movies and TV shows. Some are really bad and some are really good. Well, that's what reviews are for ........

I saw Akira eons ago. Still think it's pretty violent and depressing. Hadn't seen any of the rest though. But I think it's the Macross series that broke anime on to the US scene.

My favorite is surely Saint Seiya, but apparently it's not famous in the US. The only thing that's always the same in the japanims are that there're always highschool-young-girls-but-with-huge-breasts. That's really boring. Either the japanese are obsessed by teens, or I don't know how to call that obsession. Anyway. At least they cannot be worse than this ugly trash thing called Pokkmon. I hate them

Obviously you haven't seen that many anime. There're some that don't have you-know-what. But the fact remains in Japan, the anime mkt is geared towards teenaged and young males so you'll have all these niched characters.

And yes, I think Pokemon is stupid. It's meant for kids anyway.

Looks like I was the first person to pick Ambigous :p

It's like SKM says...some is really good, and most is bad. Just like any other form of entertainment. One thing I did notice, though, was that when I spent my semester abroad in Japan my desire to watch anime declined. It was no longer so "different" and, also, walking through the anime/manga shops demonstrated how poor the vast majority of anime is. Also, the vast amount of anime porn, while amusing, is really a waste of time.

Also, my plans to purchase anime in Japan was shorted by my desire to travel as much as possible.

I still have a soft spot for Tenchi Muyo, though! :)
