JB3 - Iroquois Mayhem (C3C Deity)

Nice turns!

I have a couple of questions:

Why are we paying Abe in a lux-lux trade? Isn't he bigger than us, and therefore should be the one paying? Or is it because we're getting Ivory from him, and Ivory enables a Wonder to be built. 2000 years ago. Next time the deal comes up, see if his Silks costs a different amount. Might just be the value of human money on Deity.

Any particular objectives in the war? Doesn't seem as though the Arabs have any lux we could use, so maybe capturing a 2nd rubber? War Weariness might keep us from being able to wipe them out in this go. (Well, that and not having an alternative gov't besides Feudalism.)

If we wanted to do something sneaky, we should research Ironclads at first. Completely useless on this map, but we might be able to trade 4-5 times and recoup our costs and get some of the other optional techs for it. [Monarchy is useful, Economics and Navigation are acceptable in lieu of cash, all else is worthless.] We could do it in ... 10 turns. Kind of a gamble. But if Ironclads@2nd is worth Nationalism@last, Ironclads@3rd gets Medicine@last, and then a couple of more trades for cash, would be worth it.

Oh, one other happy note. Abe has Airports in some of his cities.

Although Abe is a lot bigger, an extra lux will probably give us more happy faces than him, so it costs more.

The whole point of the war is for the golden age, I am not sure if this is a good move or not. We don't need anything from Arab territory but we can sure use a good 20 turns boost. I've been waiting for somebody (not Abe) to attack us however nobody is willing to, so I picked the obvious target, Abu has nothing to offer so we don't need to worry about fighting additional enemies. Abe is growing way too strong, I think he gets a new tech every 4-5 turns and can wipe out any other civs if he wants to. Smoke has no railroad, Mao and Theo are down to a few cities, Abu doesn't have anything, the war with Abe is inevitable methinks, and we should prepare for it as soon as we can.

I got it, and should get it played some time over the course of Thursday PST.

I'm not sold on the Ironclads gambit. I'd rather just use our Stock Exchanges to fuel tech steals than risk it all for a useless tech. At least we get a free war if that misses. :hammer:

Anyone else care to express an opinion?

AD 1150 (Inherited turn) [Golden Age - turn 2]
725 gold at +465gpt. Salamanca & Niagara take a break to peel workers. Start a rationing program in Bukhara but neglect to hand out ration books. Oka needs a factory more than I need an infantry. Hm... 1470 to upgrade all our spearmen. No hurry on that order. For 2100 beakers I can research Nationalism in 6. Ironclad research would take 10 turns at the same rate. This has an opportunity cost of 500gpt. With safe steals running around 2200, that's 4.5 turns to a tech. China (light pink), the Mayans (dark blue), and the Byzantines (burgundy) are all relatively safe targets for "diplomacy". If we didn't have infantry already, I'd go for the safe route and just research Nationalism. But since there's no rush, we'll just be patient and use the Byzantines as our research lab. Speaking of which, Mao will sell us Medicine for Electricity and 150 gold. Since I'm committed to stealing Nationalism, I'll bite. I don't want to trade for that awful, inflated technology.

IT: Byzantines and Arabia sign an MPP. And me without enough cash to steal. :( A privateer sinks a Spanish something-or-other, but not before it can drop its payload onto our shores. No threat thanks to the rail net! Gringos start the Theory.

AD 1160 (1) [GA-3]
Salamanca Worker > Cavalry
Niagara Worker > Factory
Centralia Cathedral > Factory
OK, so I missed that fact every piece of artillery we own is sitting in the one town that has a flip risk. Fix that. I get to pop another unit with our ancient elite archer, but still no love. Manage to keep from tripping the Byzantine MPP this turn by only hitting Arabs inside our borders. Chinese have nothing to offer for RepParts (1000 gold won't even make the pot sweet enough for Nationalism).

AD 1170 (2) [GA-4]
Grand River Wall Street > Worker peel
I begin the crawl toward Mansura, which must be taken before we can safely move on Medina and the Arab rubber. There's a wonderful mountaintop artillery base 2 squares away from both of those cities. I time my moves so that the turn that I have enough money to steal a tech from the Byzantines, I'm also ready to start shelling Arab cities (and thereby trigger their MPP, sending us to war regardless of the steal results). Unlike you, of course, I am surprised to find out that...

IT: Byzantines declare war on us, by the terms of their MPP.

AD 1180 (3) [GA-5]
Salamanca Cav > Cav
Grand River Worker > Cav
Akwesasne Market > Settler
I make a couple of last minute vetoes, deciding that Caughnawaga, Allegheny, and Chondote should have factories before banks. I like money as much as the next guy, but the factory will hasten the bank. Not the other way around. The same logic vetoes Kahnawake's Cathedral.

AD 1190 (4) [GA-6]
Tyendenaga Gun > Factory
Okay, here's the deal. China still needs Replaceable Parts (and is researching it, too). Steel, Sanitation, Ironclads, and Scientific Method are the techs they lack but could buy from us. No one owns Sanitation or Ironclads. We can buy SciMeth for all of our cash, but that's no good as trade fodder to China -- however much money I spend buying a tech will be deflated when I turn around to sell it to China. But Steel -- I can't buy steel with all of our 2680 gold. So that's the target: steal steel (ha) and use it to buy Nationalism from China. If it's still not enough for The Big N, we can renegotiate peace to make up the difference. I only have the Mayans and the Americans to choose from as targets -- Mayans, no choice. I miss. The Mayans do not declare war. [Insert your favorite 19-curse-word-combo here; you can bet I did.]

AD 1200 (5) [GA-7]
Salamanca Cav > Cav
Grand River Cav > Cav
Unremarkable turn. Set up to launch assault on Mansura.

AD 1210 (6) [GA-8]
St. Regis Factory > Cav (needs a Cathedral, but not to produce cavalry)
Akwesasne Settler > Settler
Argh! 2 of our 9 artillery hit Masura, as opposed to the complete redlining we got last turn. I postpone the battle to reduce the odds of a brutal slaughter.

IT: Bukharflips. Dangit.

AD 1220 (7) [GA-9]
Salamanca Cav > Infantry
Grand River Cav > Infantry
Assault Mansura: We lose 1 cavalry slaying 3 riflemen. Not bad. We put the torch to Mansura. I then brashly storm Bukhara and take it without loss. I could steal another tech, but this time I think I'll remember to leave 1000 in the bank. I wait. It's obviously last call for selling RP to China, so they get it for the paltry offer of World Map, Monarchy, and Economics. I knock our entertainment up to 10% to cope with rising WW.

IT: To my fury, the Arabs use RoP with America to steal 6 of our workers on the southern borders. They're put to the sword, of course.

AD 1230 (8) [GA-10]
Allegheny Factory > Bank
St. Regis Cav > Gun
Caughnawaga Factory > Bank
We shell Medina, but nothing conclusive. Not worth an assault yet.

IT: The Arab raiders flee like the dogs they are. Oh, and the gringos start Hoover Dam. Great.

AD 1240 (9) [GA-11]
Salamanca Infantry > Infantry
Grand River Infantry > Infantry
Niagara Factory > Gun
Medina's garrison is redlined. Rush in: we pay 3 cavalry to get in there. Burn it. We get 2 trebuchets for our trouble.

AD 1250 (10) [GA-12]

Sorry guys, I have to cut this one short. I gotta run and I'm not entirely sure when I'll be back. Next player should play 11 to even out the turns. Don't make peace yet! We want to settle some of that open Arab land to get something for this war!

Got it

T1 1250
Can make another steal attempt on steel from Smoke and still leave 1170 in the treasury and China still needs it So here goes, and, once more we fail without "attracting undue attention"

Arab raider escapes and lone rifleman probes defenses near mountain

Move settler from Akwesasne to Bukhara and on to landbridge to settle north of mountain

Abu wants peace but won't offer anything of value

Cavalry scouts uncover two more rifles heading north from Mecca. Cavalry seizes high ground between Mecca and Khurasan

Settler on mountain moves to settle in rubble SW of mountain

Cav scouts on mountain are assaulted by rifle and longbow and eliminate both. Riflemen and settlers move out of Mecca towards former Arab city sites

T2 1255
Artillery cripples advancing riflemen and cavalry charges eliminate them
Theo will talk peace but wants money and besides we're not finished with her accomplice Abu yet anyway. Abu will talk peace but won't offer anything of value, like Baghdad or Najran

Theo pays a return call but still wants money for peace. Sorry dearie (she does look a little like a Victorian "lady of uncertain virtue"

Abu advances his riflemen and settler into the killing zone

Maya starts Hoover Dam having completed ToE in Copan

Theo has sent a lonely guerilla towards Niagra Falls

T3 1260
Freshly built artillery cripple Theo's guerilla and a cavalryman from the west crosses the continent and eliminates him, coincidentally revealing a Byz guerilla/rifle pair in the Mayan mountains to the east of the border. Cannon at Niagra Falls gets upgraded to artillery
Found Ganogeh at Arab rubber plantation in north and Gayagaahe on landbridge
Artillery shell advancing riflemen at Ganogeh and cavalry kills settler escort and captures two more Arab slaves Slaves immediately start work on rail connection across mountain
Elite cavalry charges remaining rifleman and dies valiantly. Veteran cavalry wins promotion with the death of that last rifle

Cavalry recon from Ganogeh reveal advancing Arab forces (3 longbows and 3 riflemen).

An Arab cavalry raider is spotted on the road to Tonawanda, but still in Abe's territory. Abe wants 45g for an RoP and I pay it as I don't want to violate his border with military without permission. During the negotiation I notice Abe is broke? The cavalryman takes cannon fire and two infantry attacks before dying. We lose one regular infantryman seeking promotion

Theo's rifle/guerilla pair advance on Niagra Falls and Theo sails a Galleon and destroyer out of the fog and drops another pair east of Allegheny

Abu's advancing longbows and rifle kill exposed cavalry on mountain and take the heights. His forces divide and half head west and then north to flank Ganogeh

T4 1265
Artillery at Ganogeh shell Abu's advancing forces, crippling both halves
The vet cavalrymen at Ganogeh win promotion with the elimination of two riflemen and supporting infantry eliminate the bows. The units fortified on the mountain can wait.

Attention now turns to Theo's invaders. Artillery cripple the force at Allegheny and a new cavalryman kills the guerilla. Supporting infantry eliminate the rifleman. The same script is less successful at Niagra Falls and we lose an infantryman but eliminate the invaders with one infantry promotion

Theo signs an embargo against us with China

Abe calls to re-up the Peace Treaty. Consult the advisors and agree. He'll trade Ivory and 12gpt for Furs. It's a deal! He will let us pay 650g or 35gpt for silks. I'll wait until after I deal with Theo's latest advance (Galleon and guerillas/rifles again)

Maya also calls to re-up the Peace Treaty. Agreed. There are still 6 turns to go on the Incense deal

Salamanca riots as war weariness appears. Call Manpower for a clown and cycle through the rest of the towns. Call Manpower back and hire a lot of clowns

T5 1270
Found Gewauga on Arabian bridgehead. The bridgehead is complete. There are now three interlocking towns covering the landbridge.

Artillery and cavalry eliminate Abus's advancing riflemen at Ganogeh. Artillery start a pillaging effort against Mecca and an infantry cavalry pair move out to cripple Abu's infrastructure

In a revolting development Maya lands troops in our territory and moves cavalry in from the east

T6 1275
First order of business is to deal with the advancing Maya
Smoke will buy rubber from us at 15gpt and doesn't have anything for us to buy from him other than technology which he won't sell at decent prices. Hoping the ability to build infantry for twenty turns will keep him off our back sell him the rubber and hope he goes away quietly.
Abe will sell us steel for 3048g, leaving us 1000g in the treasury It's not worth it as I can steal it for less (2 more tries at that price)
Abu has landed a single rifle on the north coast and two rifles and a longbow are moving towards Ganogeh The rifle on the coast is toast to artillery and an infantry attack
Theo's rifle in the east takes artillery fire and kills an elite infantryman seeking promotion. He's finished by a waiting cavalryman
Combined forces at Ganogeh eliminate the riflemen and lay waste to the roads around Mecca. Call up Abu to ask about ceding Bahgdad and Najran. Sill no deal.
Mao still lacks steel but with Mayan cavalry boogeying across the land hesitate on pilferage

T7 1680
Mayan forces (cavalry) head southeast across our territory, Newly built infantry get shifted to Salamanca and orders are issued to train more.

Forces at Ganogeh move forward after eliminating the advancing Arab rifles and bows.
Battle orders are to continue to lay waste the Arab infrastructure around Mecca

He who hesitates is lost as Mao picked up Steel, so I guess I'll just steal Nationalism from him instead. That didn't work as Mao declares war...

Maya will take on the Chinese for 390g. Go get 'em Smoke, just get out of our territory you're making me nervous

The pickpocket and pointy stick approach to research isn't working. Crank up the research pace on Nationalism. Raise the luxury tax and exchange clowns for taxmen or put 'em to work in the mines.

Shift forces from the mainland to Gewauga and open a diversion thrust against Khurasan

Abu calls and wants to sign a Peace Treaty with nothing in it for us

Waiting for the Maya to attack...someone, and it turns out ot be us!!

Smoke's cavalry spreads across the territory and takes all of our labor force and buries them in mass graves. He pounds on Mauch Chunk with a battleship and destroyers but loses a cavalryman in a fruitless attack on Oka

T8 1685
Batteries in the west are shifted to Oka and shell the advancing Mayans. All but two of Smoke's cavalry are first crippled, then destroyed.

The force in the west continues the pressure on Abu but the tempo is reduced

TIme to pay a call on Abe and see if he'll join the fun. He wants 550g. Pay him as we need the counterweight and he has forces on our southern border anyway.

Abe cooperates by bombing the Mayan fleet, then sinking it with his destroyers.
He then marches his cavalry across our territory towards the Mayan outpost in the tundra. As a result many Mayan naval vessels sortie from there to escape the advancing Americans. In passing he eliminates one of two remaining Maya cavalry.

Maya responds by bombing the American ships and counterattacking with his destroyers to no avail. His ships are sunk

Mayan marauding rifles and guerillas destroy roads east of Niagra Falls

The vigilant Iroquois capture a Mayan spy

Oh, and Abu and Theo move force (1 each) toward Ganogeh and Niagra Falls respectively

T9 1690
Attacks in east and west are beaten back by combined arms. Several elite units strive for promotion but fail

Call Theo and offer a straight up Peace Treaty. That's agreed. Her protection pact with Abu has expired

Call Abu and see what I can extort. He'll give us Peace and Nationalism for 20gpt and 500g . I'm tempted to sign but will leave it for Ted to decide

And then Abu and Theo re-up their protection pact

Maya drops riflemen and cavalry on the NW coast and sends another mixed force of rifles, cavs, and guerillas against Niagra Falls.

America finishes Hoovers Dam

Theo declares on us again as we have troops in Arab territory

American Shermans move toward Mayas outpost in the NW

T10 1295
Mayan threats are eliminated with the loss of one cavalry and two infantry
The western team is moving counter-clockwise around Mecca pillaging as it goes

The Mayan colony on the tundra is putting up a fight. American Shermans are retreating.

More Mayans, including one regular infantryman show up on the eastern border and an Arab infantryman wanders down the west coast of Arabia

T11 1300
Mayan threats are eliminated in the east. Three elite cavalrymen are victorious but no promotions are granted

SitRep
Abu will now settle for a Peace Treaty and Nationalism for 200g, roughly equivalent to our self research cost

Byzantines and Chinese won't talk and the alliance with Abe has several turns to go yet

There is an Arab Galleon off the NW coast. Abu has at least one infantryman wandering around on his SE coast so he's buying rubber from someone as the site of Ganogeh was his only native source, IIRC. The Arab salient is easily defended and Abu isn't sending anything heavy at it anyway. Haven't seen any cavalry, recently, just longbows, rifles and one infantryman a long ways away.

We have settler waiting in Gaygaahe. Rail net reaches to the new towns in Arabia. The remaining workers (all Arabian slaves) are clearing pollution near St Regis. There are still some mountain mining camps needing rails.

Sorry, the Golden Age was wasted building military, though we did get some factories and banks out ot it, and I blew the Treasury in upgrades, the alliance with Abe and the push on Nationalism.

Now we get to choose: settle with Abu and pound on Smoke or try to fight a two front war. The two westernmost Mayan cities would make nice additions to our territory. The settler in the west can claim the peninsula north of Baghdad, settle between Ganogeh and the coast to cut Baghdad off from the rest of Arabia, or move deeper into Arab grasslands. The peninsula is vulnerable to Mayan or Byzantine amphib landings and will be ours anyway with a couple of border expansions.

Many elites failed to win promotion to MGL this round, maybe Ted will have better luck.

Ted

Notes
I made reasonable progress toward my goal - capture or replacement of Shanghai for the Dyes. I didn't see much point in simply capturing Mayan cities.

Chichen Itza was fortuitous as I was originally going to move down the coast to Tikal after Kawauka but saw if I abandoned and resettled 1NE I could bombard Chichen Itza immediately.

There are units with movement left if the next player wants to have a crack at Chengdu this turn. I counted 5 defenders (all redlined) and I started to destroy improvements which suggests that there aren't any more. The only problem is that Chengdu is still pop 18 and so gets the Metropolis defense bonus.
JB3-1350AD-Chengdu.jpg

There are 4 Chinese Inf near Tonawanda which I leave for the next player to deal with. I brought all the Artillery I had to bear on the pair SSE but, for once, didn't have good luck. Personally, I'd be inclined to let them retreat for now and deal with them later.
JB3-1350AD-Tonawanda.jpg

The Cav have worked pretty well for me. I only lost 4. I added another 18 elite victories but still no GL :(

Byzantium is almost gone as America rolls over them. I don't hold out much hope for Arabia either :D

The save is > here <

Ted

It looks like America's rise to power has managed to anger the other AIs. I don't think they're a threat via the UN (they're at war with 3 right now). Remember that even if they are, we're only allowed to ally with one nation at a time so any attempt to sabotage the vote will have to come from allying with America against others.

But this looks good. I'm concerned about our shape, though. There's a lot of cultural pressure on our new holdings. We need to pick a single victim and carve out a respectably-sized and responsibly-shaped territory from their homeland.

JB03 - The Pale Blue Wrecking Crew

1350 AD (0)
It seems like years since I played this game. Let's see we're Purple ...
F8 check: Abe is 2/3 of the way to domination.
F4 check: We are at war with Mao and Smoke (who, incidentally, is one extremely ugly dude). We have a Military Alliance with Abe against Smoke that has 7 turns to run. A lux-lux deal comes due in 3.
F6 check: We are 1-beakering Authoritianism. We are down a bunch of techs.
F1 check: We make 546 gpt, and do not yet have to run a lux tax. We have no real capacity to research.

Atomic Theory is 2-ferable. Make that 3-ferable. Our rep is still shot.

We are starving Chichen Itza, and hope it doesn't flip with so many of our units inside. The Byzantines might survive the first turn, but likely not the 2nd.

Won't mount an attack on the IT.

1355 AD (1)
Grand River starts the Intelligence Agency. We need to steal Smoke blind.

Start to hit a groove on bombing Chengdu, after a weak streak, so send in the Cavs: Go 4 for 4 and raze it. We get 9 slaves.

After bombing a stack of Chinese Infantry, send in an Elite Cav and pop a leader. Have to think about how to use him. Go the safe way and a Cav army. Really considered rushing the Intelligence Agency, but that's what the next leader is for. Grand River switches to Heroic Epic (due in 4).

1360 AD (2)
The Mayans have Rocketry, as I see TOW Infantry out-and-about. Red-line TOW, and kill with Elite Cav.

Thea is down to her last city, so I go for an immediate steal: We pilfer Combustion for ~1200 gold. Trade Combustion to Abu for 384 gold, Chivalry, and Navigation. We might want to build some Explorers. (whoops, wrong tech  )

1365 AD (3)
Abe and Mayans make Peace. I give Abe 80 gold to re-new ROP, want to stay on his good side. Thea survives another turn, giving more steal opportunities. :)

Mayan TOW loses to our Infantry guarding an Artillery stack.

Lose the 10 gpt kicker from Abe in renewing Lux-Lux deal.

Re-negotiate Peace and pay Abe 260 gpt for Atomic Theory. Trade Atomic Theory + 100 gold to Byzantines for Flight. Trade Atomic Theory + Flight to Abu for Authoritarianism and change. So 260 gpt for 3 techs we really needed. And we only pay the 260 gpt if we're lucky, and Abe doesn't feel like killing us.

Monumental decision: Peace with China, swapping Atomic Theory for Mass Production. Now I don't have to try to steal it from the Byz. So that turned out to be a 4-for-1 on Atomic Theory. Oh, and give China Horses + 10 gpt for an MA vs. the Mayans. We will steal our way to glory from the Mayans. (I really don't want to be stealing from Abe.) Also get ROP in separate deal.

Amphibious War is out there, but not worth even an Immediate Steal. In theory, we are researching Electronics.

1370 AD (4)
The Byz leave the building. Cav army kills a TOW that had killed one of our Infantry.

1375 AD (5)
Abe offers insurance (MPP) for 7 gpt. I decline, as that might really limit our options. Not to mention I can't remember the variant rules.

Heroic Epic completes.

After a bunch of shelling we capture Tikal. I was going to burn it, but then the pop-up indicated we had captured Leo's. That can still come in handy.

Using Chinese rails, the remainder of the artillery stack bombards K... on the other side of the sub-continent. Redlines everything, so send in the Army. Two wins, and send in a vet Cav, who also wins and we keep the city (for now).

I'll stop here and pass the game, as I'm getting kind of tired and we have to plot an end-game strategy.

Final Notes:
So in 5 turns we got 2 new cities, 5 new IA techs, an Army, the Heroic Epic, and Leonardo's Workshop. We ended one war and intensified another.

The Mayans won't last much longer. (Nor will the Arabs.) We may have to keep Smoke around long enough to steal our way into the Modern Age. We are only three techs short, but can't two-fer the initial tech with our good buddies the Chinese. Grand River is building an Airport, in the vain hope we can pull another leader to rush the Intelligence Agency. If we don't get a leader in 6 turns, we can swap the Airport to the IA.

I don't believe Abe can reach the domination limits without attacking us. Smoke has just those 5 cities, so we may end up blockading the Chinese troops and risking flips so we can steal techs. I don't know how this will end. It won't be by UN vote, but whether Abe attacks us or tries to beat us into space?

Of course, if we build up our research infrastructure, we can research everything Abe as at 50% off, once it is down to just the two of us. I fully expect to roll the Chinese after Smoke dies, and the Arabs are just about gone.

That Atomic Theory sure was sweet. See? Who needs a trading rep, anyway?

My vote is that we beeline for Modern Armor and stomp the Americans, building upgradeable Tanks along the way. We could try to beat him into space, but we're talking about the Native versus the Colonial Americans here. How can this not end in bloodshed?

Just a couple of more notes for Toasted:

The Peace Treaty, ROP, and MA with the Chinese are all separate deals, so nothing funky will happen when the Mayans die. I don't expect the Mayans to go on your 10, as we need to steal 2 (or 3) techs from them. You could easily wipe them out, but then we'd be left with stealing from Abe.

Once we illicitly acquire Electronics, sell it to the Chinese for anything they can give. We need to have them research/buy Mot. Transport while we steal Radio to most efficiently get into the Modern Age.

You also have to decide how to push infrastructure. If we're going for Space, we need lots of research Infra. If we are going to fight Abe, we'll likely have to do it from Communism, and will need Courthouses/Police Stations everywhere. Although oddly, I didn't notice any WW on my turns. Maybe we can stay in a Republic after we roll China and get up to 6 native lux.
