JB3 - Iroquois Mayhem (C3C Deity)

I'm hoping Grand River or St. Regis for FP. Centralia is a no-go for now due to my reckless last-minute whipping.

I was more comfortable seeing Barracks queued up, but by no means is it the only way to go. I vetoed some half-dozen Temples to my whim; I enourage you to do the same with my Barracks.

Assuming you read this before you play, Improviser.

Sorry team, I will have to ask to be dropped from this succession game (and from all of them)... due to a virtual ban on computer games which has been placed on me. I'm really sorry that this has happened- I wouldn't have signed up for any succession games if I knew that I would have to do this. I hope to be back on these forums eventually...

Improviser

Bad luck Improviser. Hope to see you back again in the future.

Oh well, it looks as if it's me next so consider this a got it :)

Got it

Will play Tuesday

OK, took a look at the save and have a few comments.

We are running all cash when no one will take out gpt. To "alleviate" that difficulty, I would strongly suggest we re-negotiate peace with the Byzantines and the Chinese. One can buy Currency (to switch the libraries to markets) for ~300 gold from the Byz at the peace table. China would pay us for peace, so we can get a discount on a tech or three from them.

I would give the Byz cash at the peace table, for the slight discount over credit, and because she is Polite with us and we have an ongoing per-turn deal. She is very unlikely to break the peace.

China, on the other hand, is Furious with us for having broken an earlier deal, so Mao should get gpt for techs. That way if he attacks, we get our money back.

[If the tactic of re-negotiating peace is unfamiliar to you, here's what you do. (1) Open the diplomacy screen and select Active at the bottom of the screen. (2) Select Peace Treaty. (3) The Foreign Advisor will flip out, but confirm your choice. (4) Add stuff from their side and ours like a usual trade deal. (5) Critical part, once you start this process, you have to complete a deal. If you cancel out of the dialogue, you are declaring war. The Mil. Advisor pops up if you try, so you shouldn't accidentally declare war. (6) We then honor 20 turns of peace, and can repeat the process.]

Since we only get one crack at this every 20 turns, I would definitely investigate buying multiple techs on credit from Mao. Can probably spend up to our gpt (at 10% lux), as by the time we would have to raise lux above 10% some of the markets will have completed.

The Chinese are at war with the Americans, so expect troop movement across our lands. Might consider an ROP with the Chinese, just to get those Riders moving out of our way. Also wouldn't hurt for Abe to feel a little pain on his cities, as he is the leader. No clue what the Mayan troops are doing, but I've got a queasy feeling.

While we do have some issues with Unit Support costs, we also need to have our Barracks cities building troops. Just replace regular warriors with vet spears, and get some artillery to the Arab and Mayan fronts. Once the markets start to come online we'll be able to afford a decent military.

One final note on re-negotiating peace: Try not to include lux/resources in the deal. A broken trade route in that case is a declaration of war!

{From a shadow IT, we can easily buy our way into the MA through Peace Re-negotiation}

Thanks for the input Will make it so

The Quiet Life

Open peace treaty negotiations with Byzantines and get Currency for 290g

Size 6-7 cities switch to markets (Salamanca, Grand River, Niagra Falls)

Raise lux to 10% to set bargaining limit

Open negotiations with Mao Peace Treaty and 40gpt nets us the last three techs Add RoP and he throws in a 3gp rebate He is now merely annoyed I am tempted by his dyes but he wants incense plus the rest of the treasury and I'm still feeling snake-bit by the volcano

Now that deals are done lux goes back to 0

Everybody in the world has the first tier MA techs except Mao who lacks engineering and has no money to pay for it though his treasury is getting a nice boost from us right now Teddie of Constantinople could use some incense but won't cough up enough money to helps us out here

JB3 - Livin' On A Prayer

250 AD (0)
Well, let's take Bede up on his generous offer to "change anything!". Salamanca swaps from a library we won't use until the Industrial Age (at least) to a MW. Swap a tile at Niagara, gaining a buck and not losing a turn on the Market. Grand River and Mauch Chunk swap tiles, gaining another buck. Tonawonda swaps from Barracks to Harbor, border city with the Mayan outpost, but won't have shields to build military anytime soon. Thought about walls, but city will be size 7 soon enough. Allegheny was only 1 shield short of Courthouse, swap a lot of tiles to squeeze out a few bucks. Without an Aqueduct and stuck at size 6, Tonawanda runs a tax-man. St. Regis goes from FP to Spear. We need better troops, now. Also allows me to configure Grand River to grow next turn. Centralia goes to Courthouse. I think this is where the FP should go, as we will eventually have to eat into the American territory. Scratch that, war of our choosing won't come for a long time. St. Regis will go back on FP duty, after the military is beefed up. There will be 5 or 6 cities producing troops by the end of my turn. Income went up 4 gpt. Rush Market at Niagara, should send city into WLKD and can start it building its own defenses.

260 AD (1)
Salamanca: MW --> Spear.
Niagara: Market --> Aqueduct. Population before troops.
Grand River: Market --> Spear.
Allegheny: Court --> Spear.
St. Regis: Spear --> Spear.
Income now +53 gpt. Lux can go to 0%, income to +75 gpt.

270 AD (2)
Nothing much happens. Build Embassy with US to relieve the boredom. The Americans are up to at least Metallurgy, as they have cannons in their capital. :cringe: Running 100% science, so must be receiving gpt from all the other AI. Six lux, one of each strategic resource. Will complete Shakespeare's Theater in 5 turns.

The biggest problem we have is that no one is fighting. Abe may be industrial before the end of my turns, or may just decide to wail on us with Cavalry.

280 AD (3)
Salamanca: Spear --> Spear.
Grand River: Spear --> Spear.

Some deals are up. Get two more gpt from Abe for our Furs. Get an extra gpt from Thea for horses.

We are so far behind, and I fear an extortion for a resource from our neighbors. Try something radical. (1) Re-negotiate peace with Arabs. Give Horses + WM + 9 gpt, get Engineering + WM. We get a tech for essentially just the Horses, and Abu won't just jack us up for them. We would have had to pay 175 gold to swap WM, so the gpt covers just that. Pay 30 gold to swap WM with Abe, get 26 back from various folks. (2) Re-negotiate peace with the Mayans. Give Incense + 50 gpt, get Feudalism (which is just absurdly expensive). Now nobody can demand nothing, since we have no extras. The Incense was worth 10 gpt in the tech deal, and nobody could actually pay.

I included resources in these deals because we have (volcano-safe) road connections to the Arabs and Mayans. Only if they (or the Americans) declare war on us would these trade routes be in jeopardy. The Americans could finish us in about 5 turns once they get Cavalry. Unfortunately, no 2-fer on Invention exists.

290 AD (4)
St. Regis: Spear --> Spear.
Kahnwake: Temple --> Spear.
Caughnawaga: Temple --> Harbor.

Starting to replace the cardboard cutouts at the choke points.

300 AD (5)
Abu demands 28 gold + TM. I let him have it. If we were paying him the 50 gpt, I'd have told him to cram it. We are not at all prepared for a war, no matter how tempting it is to get Engineering + WM for 18 gold.
Salamanca: Spear --> Spear.
Grand River: Spear --> Spear.
Allegheny: Spear --> Trebuchet.
Oka: Temple --> Harbor.

310 AD (6)
Nothing going on.

320 AD (7)
Hoo-boy. A few Riders suddenly charge through our territory. :eek:
This may hit the fan right now. They have an ROP, so I can't do anything about this. I am not certain they are going for us. They are not headed for our softest target. Well, here goes nothing ....

330 AD (8)
They are attacking the Americans! You go Mao! :ninja:

Washington completes Shakes'.

340 AD (9)
Byz complete Magellans. Check that, the Chinese are not attacking the Americans. They must be attacking the Arabs. Well, this should be stupid. :rolleyes:

350 AD (10)
Nothing exciting.

Notes for Ben: I had a (unit) builders turn. All but one of the regular Warriors defending our cities has been drummed out of service. The two choke point cities have three vet spears and a MW. I was trying to put two spears in every city bordering the Americans, and one everywhere else. I was not disbanding regular Spears. You might consider doing so, as there isn't much for some of our cities to build. I would suggest a round of MW's and then one of Trebs to flesh out our military. I'd think at least a dozen artillery are needed. We still have cardboard cut-outs, but after you hook up the iron and upgrade to pikes, it will be really heavy cardboard.

Also note that you have the Peace Treaties to re-negotiate with Mao and the Byz. I had my round of trading in turn 3. It doesn't appear that any 2-fers exist. The more I think about it, the more I question what I did in turn 3. That had the potential to get real ugly if the Chinese had attacked us and we inadvertently went to war with the Mayans or Arabs.

Hi in 350 AD

As much as I loathe doing this to a 4-player game, I have to be skipped this round. I'm fleeing town for the weekend. Then next week I get to play catch-up for all the work I won't get done while I'm away. I really want a piece of this game, too. Next round, next round...

Got it

I've got a pretty busy weekend so I probably won't finish until Sunday :(

Ted

Ted, just a few notes on the game:

Even though St. Regis is one of our barracks cities, I have it on an Aqueduct instead of troops. This would make a nice location for the FP, so I was thinking Aqueduct --> Market --> FP there. None of the cities in the south can build the FP without a lot of help.

Grand River will riot at size 12. The cheapest thing to do is run a tax-man rather than raise lux or try to import another.

If you don't have anything better to build, replacing the reg Spears with vets and the reg Archers with vet MW's would be useful. Easily accomplished by the end of your turns.

Remember to check the active deals on the IT.

Still can't afford Gunpowder

Notes
I bought Invention at the beginning of my turns hoping to be able to afford Gunpowder by the end. But it didn't happen.

I decided not to connect the Iron yet - didn't want to take the risk of it depleting :)

All in all, just a steady building & roading turn.

The save is > here <

Ted

Got it

Look for news tomorrow late evening

Didn't look at the save, because I got an error while opening it. (1st time a DataI/O error, 2nd time spontaneous exit! :lol: ) So if Ted can check that he can open the unzipped file I can verify the problem is on my end.

Have a couple thoughts, though:

We may not be able to afford Gunpowder because our gpt rep is shot. We should be clearing about 65 gpt after ending our "Peace" payment with the Chinese. I'm not sure why the Arabs would take our money, but better for us. :confused:

We traded the Arabs ~46 gpt (using 1 gpt=18 cash) for Invention. At the peace table it would have cost us 38 gpt from the Byzantines and the Chinese. (Net cost 37 gpt, since each would be willing to pay us 1 gpt not to hurt them.) So I think our gpt rep comes back in pieces, and we are almost fully rehabilitated with the Arabs. Did you check with the Americans or Byz (non-peace renogiation)? Are they taking our gpt (at a possibly reduced conversion rate) now? I'd have to assume our rep takes longer to recover with civs we break deals with.

Without opening the save I can't see who's building what, but Bede might consider acquiring Monotheism so we can switch our two big cities to Cathedrals. Or stick with Colosseums, I think Cols are 110 shields so ~2/3 the cost for 2/3 the culture and happies. I do believe we have no use for libraries yet.

I think our goal on the tech front is to get one tech before the Chinese do, so we can start to 2-fer with them. This tech almost has to be on the bottom of the tech tree, as the Chinese have Navigation since we could trade maps with them. On Bede's third turn, everyone but the Chinese should be available for a "chat" about peace. One possible way to play it is as follows: (1) Use our extra Incense as part of a deal to acquire Monotheism from the Mayans. The Incense is worth ~9 gpt to them, and they likely don't have the money to pay. So we take it as a discount on tech. We are currently paying them 50 gpt as part of the Feudalism deal. I have to figure we won't be paying more than 20 gpt + Incense for Mono. (2) Use one of our extra Horses as partial payment to the Arabs to acquire Gunpowder. Not sure what the Horses are worth to them, but I'd guess something like Horses + 30 gpt for Gunpowder. (3) Invite Theadora over for a friendly discussion and pay gpt for Chemistry. (4) Trade Chemistry to Mao for Theology. Try to conserve cash for part (4), as Mao won't take gpt from us and we may have to make up some difference in cost if he is researching Chemistry.

We are not the lone supplier of Horses in the world, the Arabs could get horses from the Mayans. I feel this made trading them Horses less risky, as we didn't have the obvious benefit of permanently denying them Horses without a war (which they would be less capable of fighting.)

If this is too much instruction, just say so.

I re-downloaded th save & got a CRC error when I tried to decompress it. So here's a fresh save:
