JOE-05 - The Crusades

TURN 0: 1721AD
Turning Arpinium into a military whipping town is a sound plan, but it'll be a while before the Globe can be whipped as it requires 10 spare pop (at the moment there is only 3 spare pop).

Rome is unhappy, so I whip the University. Growth to happy cap in 13 turns, no effect on Specialists. We have a fair bit of Emancipation unhappy but I have a cunning plan regarding that which I'll share later...

The Great General is heading to Arpinium and will arrive to join the city in 6 turns.

Having a look at the power graph and we are second to Peter, with Mehmed 3rd. Liz is quite low down so hopefully she won't be too big a problem when the time comes...

Alexandria is unhappy. I'll whip the Library as soon as population allows.

TURN 1: 1724AD
Rome > University > Wall Street (37). Why? Big commerce boost in our biggest commerce city. The 37 turn time will come down when the two forests have Lumbermills in them. Two Workers are sent from Lyons for just this task.

Diyarbakir > Eurgh...I would have razed this. Workers here start a Windmill.

Tours > Workers start a Lumbermill.

TURN 2: 1727AD
Lyons > We're building Lumbermills here that we're not going to be able to work. I stop this and send the Workers to Orleans to build Lumbermills we can work.

Pi-Ramesses > Unhappy, so I whip the Library. Happy cap in 11 turns.

TURN 3: 1730AD
Peter offers Ivory for Copper. I agree as the extra happy always comes in handy (for extra whip room mostly!). Research also drops from 80% to 70% (+7gpt). It doesn't affect the Democracy research.

Lyons > University > Grenadier

Pi-Ramesses > Library > Harbour (for the extra trade route coinage).

TURN 4: 1732AD
Democracy comes in. I veto vra's plan of going to Railroad next (we still need Steam Power), in favour of Rifling. Do I go to Emancipation? Nope...I'll tell you why shortly.

Heliopolis Workers start on a Pig Pasture where it was presumably pillaged (try saying THAT fast after several strong drinks).

Rome Workers start Lumbermill.

TURN 5: 1734AD
Marseilles > Cannon > Cannon

Galleons from Liverpool are heading for Alexandria which I have designated the military pickup point. Same for the Newcastle Galleons. I trawled our lands for units I thought we could spare, and there is a fair number on the way to Alexandria. I would suggest running 0% science at some point for mass upgrades of our defenses (a lot of old units). There are some Galleys that could be upgraded to Galleons for extra transport room as well.

Now, the GS in Pisae. Pisae is our second best science city, currently running at 100 beakers. There is no academy here, so I use him for the academy, beakers now at 133.

I just noticed that Arpinum has no defence, so I remedy the situation.

TURN 6: 1736AD
Mediolanum > Forum > Barracks (this is potentially a good production city and should be churning out units).

Asyut > Worker > Lighthouse

Mehmed adopts Representation...maybe he's having a happy problem?

The Great General joins Arpinium, our whip city...we're still nowhere near being able to whip the Globe here.

TURN 7: 1738AD
Arretium > University > Cannon

Alexandria whips the Library to remove the unhappy souls in our city.

TURN 8: 1740AD
Mehmed's power is steadily increasing, but is still not up to ours yet.

TURN 9: 1742AD
Rifling comes in. I start on Steam Power heading for Railroads.

Lyons > Grenadier > Grenadier

Alexandria > Library > Forge

Rome gives us yet another GS (Einstein). He's on the way to our third best science city for the creation of an Academy (Paris).

I check trades and there's nothing worth going for.

TURN 10: 1744AD
Peace deal with Mehmed comes to an end.

Orleans > University > Grenadier

Marseilles is starving due to border pop from Freddy.

Essex > Forum > University.

So, what's the what with Emanciptation I here you ask?

At the moment, Emanciptation unhappy is not really affecting us, but it will in the not too distant future. When it gets to the point of being a real pain and we HAVE to turn to Emancipation, I would suggest whipping every city we've got for units and then changing civics. The one unhappy from whipping will be buried in the number of people we get back from being in Emancipation.

This'll give us a nice size stack in just a couple of turns.

Other than that, pretty much everywhere that should have a lumbermill does have a lumbermill. There are troops moving to Alexandria and they should finish getting there in 7 or 8 turns.

Again, I would suggest running 0% science at some point for a couple of turns to gain cash for upgrading primarily our city defence units (primarily border units).

There was nothing really picture worthy in this turnset...sorry it looks dull!

Got it. I was checking the thread often but didnt see any change, then I didnt check for 12 hours and boom.

Will read the report and look at the save soon. Great that we are moving again.

Peter's Fav civic is beauracracy and we have +3 with him for it. We might need to keep this modifier because without it we will drop to Cautious. He is powerful enough to go after us, even though he is annoyed at Elizabeth. If we stay in Beaureau we can afford to trade with Liz.

There is a Great person coming. If scientist, shall we pop something? Probably sci method.
Also what is the consensus on tech? Assembly line or railroads?
Railroads to build quick effective defense against the next Mehemed stack on our shore , assembly for infantry, though we have very few to upgrade.

BTW sorry about Arpinium having no production. If I had left it in Thebes' spot it would have great prod, but we didnt know that there would be no counter attack. A counter attack could have lost us all our promoted preats, so I stand by my decision to move it to a hill. We will get our draft city, but we should stay in Bearu , not Nationhood, to please Peter. It adds up to stamping out Mehemed, and then going after Peter with infantry to raze his 2 Muslim cities later on.

Edit: Mehemed has steam which means he will have either infantry or machine guns soon. We will have to put together a pretty good stack to attack him this time.

Difficult decision...if we carry on to Railroad, we risk Mehmed (and everyone else) getting even further ahead with their military. Assembly line for Infantry may leave us open to attack.

All things being equal, I'd go for Assembly Line. This is after all, an offensive game not a defensive one, and losing a couple of cities while we're flattening Mehmed's wouldn't be a huge loss (depending on the city). Heavily defend the best cities, and leave the cruddy ones with a few old units.

I know that's a contradiction since I set us off on the path to Railroads, but hey, I'm the captain and I can change my mind if I want. :D

OK. It's a tricky one eh? I'll go for Infantry then. Good trick with the emancipation. Not my turnset, but it will be handy when we get to use it. I'd be surprised if he dumps a really dangerous stack on us. We can have cash in reserve to upgrade when needed and just weather it out like last time.

Turn 0 tweaked a few tiles, nothing radical.

Turn 1 Mainly troops heading to the pick up point. Notice that we have only 5 universities either built or on the way so I cue one in Cumae. They are all twenty or so turns away. Could whip later if we want to. Oxford is a lesser priority than troops at the moment.

Turn 2 No big changes.

Turn 3 Same, moves to the pick up point. The scientist in Paris builds the academy.

Turn 4
Workboat finished and sent to Arpinium. (I'm sure I re-named that city)

Turn 5
Rifles ordered in some cities. Sending them to defense spots near the last invasion spot, but they can easily go to the pick up point if someone wants them in the stack.

Turn 6 At current tech rate, sci method is 4 turns. I think it's better to self research it than trade it to Peter for Liberalism and Democracy. That's too advantageous for him. Our scientist has appeared, but he can pop most of Physics after we do sci method. We should be able to trade Assembly line for Railroads with Fred. So it was good to go for Assembly L.

Turn 7 Liz asks for Liberalism but I refuse, because she is Peter's worst enemy. The negative modifiers for this can get quite high so we should cut Liz off for the time being. We can trade with Fred for Railways
Peter has a big power lead and tends to attack people. I really think we need to appease him in order to be able to attack Mehemed. He must keep him pleased.

Peter asks for Democracy. I refuse because we have a couple of points lee way before cautious. Then it makes sense to trade Lib and Demo with him for Sci method, because it takes away his opportunity to ask for it. So we get Sci method, which means the Scientist in Pisae can pop 3000 beakers of Physics. I opt for this. we will have good trade bait for Fred to get railroads.

Turn 8 just more builds and moves to the pick up point.

Turn 9 Lumbermills in Neopolis and Cumae.

Turn 10 Assembly line comes in, but Fred wont trade for Railways, so I tech to railways next.
Globe whipped in Arpinium!

We are 8 turns from the last university for Oxford.

I left the whipping trick with Emancipation for Rince to do. Aswell as all the units we can finish this uni and get oxford started.

Peter is on 5. 1 point from cautious. Possibly I should have given him Democracy.I recommend giving in to his demands for a while and not dealing with Liz.

The stack is shaping up nicely. The Emancipation whip should be just about it.

To repeat, I think we cant go to Nationhood to draft. It would send Peter down 3 points.

On the other hand maybe I'm being a wimp. Better would be Liz attacks Peter while we hammer Mehemed.

Ok, here it is:

1
Globe Theater built

2
nothing

3
Hatty breaks the chains of vassalage and is free again and in china a bag of rice fell over.

4
Peter demands we cancel deals with Liz. Since this would displace our troops to god know where I decline.

5
nothing

6
Railroads is in but we have NO COAL MINE! The only source of coal we have has a cottage on top. Send in workers to fix that.
Research is set to Military Tradition.

7
Get Combustion + 40g from Lizzy for Assembly Line.
Mehmed starts his golden age.
Wallstreet is in, production in Rome set to Oxford University due in 20 turns (no stone).

8
Peter cancels Ivory deal.

9
nothing

10
Military Tradition is in, set research to Physics but this can be vetoed of course.

So in general a lot of military production was going on. I sent a first batch of units over the big pond. We now also have transports and can build destroyers. Some border cities have been reinforced with Infantry.
Once we declare war on Mehmed we should not forget the expeditonary force he has still stationed on our continent.

Our economy and research are very strong. I did not do the Emancipation trick since happiness only starts to be a problem now and I did not want to waste happy population for whipping.

Here a picture of the stack which is already on the new continent:

5_1.jpg

Some old units but Infantry is on the way. I also upgraded some units, but only if they had promotions (There are not too many).

Good stuff Rince. I'm thinking that maybe Cosmic can use the Emancipation trick for defensive units and/or destroyers to guard against counter-attack.

Be interesting to see how that huge stack does against Mehmed's more advanced units...

Go get 'em, Cosmic.

I wonder if Cosmic is back. About the stack. I think we will get cut to pieces until we add a lot of infantry. Mehemed will get to artillary soon. We could do a sneak hit on Istanbul if we have enough troops. Risky but high return.

We have 11 Infantry units total. One is already near the stack, two are on a frigate, two are at the military pickup, some are stationed in the border cities (around 3 or 4) and the rest is en route to the pickup point.

It just takes a huge amount of time to get them from the production city to the front. Of course this will change quickly with transports, of which we have on at the pickup point, and especially railroads which are still waiting for the coal to be mined.

Hard to judge when the best moment for attack will be. I'd say in about 5 turns when 5 Infantry have joined the stack.

Greetings,

Rince

Mmm, I guess we could attack on the north border and see what he's got, hiding back in Liz's territory. That's why i thought an attack in the south aswell might work. Really confuse the AI, do some pillaging.

Maybe this second crusade can be a skirmish before we throw every hammer at him and raze that shrine.
