There are many rivers in the US, Mississippi being the biggest,with 31 states being iuncluded in it's watershed. Or did I not understand your post?
But I agree, we should post states we know that it's not in from the clues.

What I meant was that the city can't be anywhere on the map, it has to be ADJACENT to a river. This eliminates most most of the U.S. landmass.

That number will still be pretty big. I've lived in 5 different U.S. cities, and they were all adjacent to rivers.

During the time that the United States was settled, most cities were founded on rivers. Also all states, except for maybe Rhode Island, have at least one river.
